New Delhi, 8th November 2026: A district consumer commission in Telangana has ordered quick-commerce platform Zepto to pay ₹57,000 after it sold a grocery product for ₹34 more than its printed MRP. The case drew wide attention after Labour Law Advisor, the legal awareness creator, posted a reel titled “₹34 ke liye, Zepto ko Toda”.

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Ranga Reddy, passed the order on October 13, 2026, Outlook Money reported.

What happened

The complainant, K. Shiva Ganesh, a 35-year-old advocate from Uppal in Hyderabad, ordered tender jackfruit and a pack of MTR 3 Min Poha on Zepto on September 28, 2023. His bill was ₹293, including a ₹5 handling charge.

He said one product with a printed MRP of ₹150 was listed at ₹214 before discount and sold to him for ₹184, which is ₹34 above the MRP. Zepto denied misleading him and asked for the complaint to be dismissed, according to the order.

According to Zepto’s reply in the case, it offered to settle the matter, but the complainant refused and asked for ₹5,000 more. The commission then heard the case on merits.

What the commission ordered

The commission agreed that selling essential groceries above MRP misleads consumers. It ordered:

  • ₹2,000 compensation to the complainant
  • ₹5,000 towards his litigation costs
  • ₹50,000 to be deposited in the Consumer Legal Aid Account of the Ranga Reddy commission
  • Compliance within 45 days of receiving the order

Zepto can appeal to the state commission. Whether it has done so was not known at the time of publishing.

Not Zepto’s first consumer case

The Central Consumer Protection Authority had earlier fined Zepto ₹7 lakh over “dark patterns” such as fees that appeared only at checkout. Zepto appealed, and the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission stayed the penalty on January 20, 2026, according to Medianama’s reading of Zepto’s IPO papers.

Why a ₹34 case matters

The amount in this case was small, but the order sends a message to every quick-commerce app. Prices on these apps change often, and buyers rarely compare the app price with the MRP printed on the pack. Consumer commissions can award compensation and costs, and can also direct a company to pay into a legal aid fund, as happened here.

How to complain if an app charges above MRP

  • Take a screenshot of the product page and your bill, and a photo of the MRP printed on the pack
  • Raise it with the app’s customer support first and keep the ticket number
  • Call the National Consumer Helpline on 1915, or file online at consumerhelpline.gov.in
  • For a formal case, file on the e-Daakhil portal of the consumer commissions; small claims can be filed without a lawyer
