Mumbai, 8th November 2026: The National Stock Exchange and BSE will hold their special one-hour Muhurat Trading session today, Sunday, November 8, on Diwali Lakshmi Pujan. Continuous trading in the equity segment runs from 2:20 pm to 3:30 pm and marks the start of Samvat 2083.
The timings were set in exchange circulars dated October 19, Business Today reported.
Muhurat Trading 2026 timings
- Continuous trading starts: 2:20 pm
- Ends: 3:15 pm for securities in the call auction (CAS) category, 3:30 pm for the rest
- Segments: equity, derivatives and commodities, with segment-wise timings listed in the circulars
- Next regular trading holiday: Tuesday, November 10, for Diwali Balipratipada
NSE’s circular says all trades in the session carry normal settlement obligations, so a buy or sell placed today is a real trade, not a symbolic one.
Why the session is held
Muhurat Trading marks the start of the new Hindu accounting year. Many traders and business families place a small token order as a good-luck start. BSE began the tradition in 1957 and NSE followed in 1992, according to Business Today.
What finance creators are telling followers
Two of India’s best-known finance creators have taken different angles on this year’s Diwali session.
Chartered accountant and educator CA Rachana Ranade (@ca_rachanaranade) posted on November 6 that the Nifty had surged nearly 8% in six trading sessions, asking followers whether the rally could last. The market’s run was real: on November 4 the Nifty closed at 23,961, above 23,900 for the first time in two months, in its longest winning streak since June, according to NewsBytes.
Labour Law Advisor (@labourlawadvisor), the personal finance and legal awareness channel, titled its November 5 reel “Mahurat Trading is a LIE!?”, questioning the belief that trades placed in the auspicious hour bring extra luck.

Samvat 2083 and the commodities session
Samvat is the Hindu calendar year traditionally used by Indian traders for their account books, and Muhurat Trading opens the new year, Samvat 2083. MCX, the commodities exchange, is also holding a Muhurat session today, with its own timings announced separately.
Before you place a Muhurat trade
- The session is short and volumes can be thin, so prices can jump around. Use limit orders rather than market orders
- Check that your broker’s app shows the Muhurat session before you log in
- A token buy of a stock you already planned to own is fine; do not trade only because the hour is “auspicious”
- Remember November 10 is a holiday, so the next regular session after today is Monday, November 9
