Udyam registration is the government’s free MSME registration. You apply on the official portal, udyamregistration.gov.in, with the owner’s Aadhaar (and its linked mobile number) and the business’s PAN. There are no documents to upload and no fee, and the Udyam certificate is generated online once you submit.
For Pune’s small manufacturers in Bhosari, Chakan and Hadapsar, and for traders, consultants and service businesses across the city, Udyam is often the first registration a bank or a government scheme asks for. It is also a favourite target of lookalike websites that charge Rs 1,500 or more for a certificate that costs nothing.
Step-by-step: Udyam registration online
- Go to udyamregistration.gov.in. Check the address carefully; it must end in .gov.in.
- Click For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as MSME.
- Enter the Aadhaar number and name of the proprietor, managing partner, karta or authorised signatory, and verify with the OTP.
- Enter the PAN of the business (or of the proprietor) and validate it. GSTIN is asked for only if your business is required to have one.
- Fill in the business name, address, bank details, activity (manufacturing or services) and NIC codes, number of employees, and investment and turnover.
- Submit with the final OTP. Your Udyam Registration Number is generated, and the e-certificate can be downloaded from the portal.
Documents and details you need
- Aadhaar of the owner or authorised signatory, linked to a working mobile number
- PAN of the enterprise (for a company, LLP or firm) or of the proprietor
- GSTIN, if applicable
- Bank account number and IFSC
- Investment in plant, machinery or equipment, and annual turnover (from your ITR and GST returns where available)
You do not upload any certificate or scan. The investment and turnover figures are self-declared and are later updated automatically from income tax and GST data.
MSME limits from April 2025
The government revised the limits with effect from 1 April 2025. A business must stay within both the investment and the turnover limit for its category.
| Category | Investment in plant, machinery or equipment | Annual turnover |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | Up to Rs 2.5 crore | Up to Rs 10 crore |
| Small | Up to Rs 25 crore | Up to Rs 100 crore |
| Medium | Up to Rs 125 crore | Up to Rs 500 crore |
Export turnover is not counted towards the turnover limit.
What Udyam registration helps with
- Priority-sector lending and access to collateral-free loan schemes through banks
- Protection against delayed payments from buyers under the MSMED Act, including the Samadhaan portal for complaints
- Eligibility for central and Maharashtra MSME schemes, subsidies and government tenders
- Business proof that many banks accept for a current account, along with other documents
Do you need to renew Udyam registration?
No. There is no renewal. Each PAN gets one Udyam number for life. If you add a new unit, branch or activity, update the existing registration instead of registering again; duplicate registrations are not allowed.
Udyam, Shop Act or GST?
They are separate. Udyam is your MSME identity, the Shop Act registration or intimation is a Maharashtra labour law requirement for the premises, and GST depends on turnover and the type of business. Our guide to the Shop Act licence in Pune covers the state rules.
