Pune, 30th October 2026: More than six out of every ten older vehicles in Pune still do not have a high security registration plate (HSRP). According to Pune RTO figures up to October 26, about 16.12 lakh vehicles registered before April 1, 2019 are yet to get the new plates fitted.
Around 26 lakh vehicles under the Pune RTO need HSRPs. Only 9,88,179 installations have been completed so far, which is about 38 per cent.
The numbers so far
- Vehicles that need HSRP: about 26 lakh
- Orders placed: 12,00,391
- Appointments booked: 11,97,950
- Plates fitted: 9,88,179
- Still pending: about 16.12 lakh
There is also a gap of 2,09,771 between appointments booked and plates actually fitted. Many owners say they booked a slot but are still waiting, or missed the slot and did not rebook.
Joint checks by RTO and police
Deputy RTO Swapnil Bhosale said joint teams of the RTO and police will inspect vehicles to improve compliance and to catch fake or unauthorised plates. He said fake plates make it hard to identify vehicles and enforce traffic rules, and warned owners against going for unauthorised plates just because they are cheaper.
Vehicles found violating the rules may face action under the law. The RTO has not announced a fresh deadline or a fine amount in its latest update.
How to get HSRP fitted without trouble
Book only through the official HSRP booking link listed on the Maharashtra Transport Department website, or at an authorised dealer or fitment centre. Before paying, check that the centre is on the authorised list. Roadside shops that offer “HSRP-style” plates are not valid, and you could end up paying twice.
Keep the booking receipt on your phone until the plate is fitted. If you missed your slot, rebook rather than waiting for a call.
Pune traffic police have been stepping up drives across the city. You can also report wrong parking in Pune online, and for daily travel options see our Pune Metro guide.
