Pune, 30th October 2026: Pune will receive 13 TMC of water from the Khadakwasla system this year, but residents should be ready for tighter restrictions. That was the message after the canal committee met at the Pune District Collector’s office on Thursday, October 29.
Water Resources Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil said the city would get its allocated share and that curbs would be considered so that stock lasts. Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, who chairs the committee, said supply has to be planned until August 2027, with a 10 per cent reserve kept aside for other needs.
The numbers do not fully match yet
There is some confusion over the city’s share. PMC had asked for 21 TMC. Earlier this week the irrigation department was reported to have approved 11.33 TMC, against 16 TMC last year, and had proposed a 20 per cent cut in use from the Khadakwasla dams. On Thursday, Vikhe Patil put the city’s allocation at 13 TMC. Until a written order is issued, treat the exact figure as provisional. We covered the earlier proposal in our Pune water cut update.
What PMC will decide next
Mayor Manjusha Nagpure said the civic administration will meet within a day or two to decide on restrictions. For now, the existing Thursday shutdown continues across the city. No new cut, date or percentage had been finalised at the time of writing.
If more cuts come, areas at the tail end of the network, such as parts of Kondhwa, Wagholi, Kharadi and the merged villages, usually feel it first. Housing societies that depend on tankers in summer may want to plan early this year.
Construction water and tankers
Pawar said potable water should not be used for construction and that stricter decisions on this are on the way. She also ordered that tanker supply start immediately wherever it is needed in the district, and asked agencies to step up water-saving campaigns.
Agriculture Minister Dattatray Bharne said reserves are being planned for drinking water for people and livestock along with farm needs. He said drought damage assessments are 97 per cent complete and farmers will get assistance.
Why the stock is under pressure
Officials pointed to deficient rainfall this monsoon and the risk of El Niño next year. NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule said she was not satisfied with the water planning and that earlier action could have eased farmers’ difficulties.
The canal committee will meet again in January to review storage.
What households can do
Fix leaking taps and flush tanks, avoid washing cars with hose pipes, and store water only as much as needed on the day before a shutdown. Pimpri-Chinchwad has already started acting against illegal pumping; read about the PCMC drive in Thergaon and Pimple Nilakh.
This is a developing story. We will update this article when PMC announces its decision on restrictions.
