Pimpri-Chinchwad, 29th October 2026: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has seized 23 motor pumps in a crackdown on illegal water extraction in Pimple Nilakh and Thergaon, following complaints of low water pressure from housing societies in the area.

Illegally attached motor pumps pull water directly from the municipal pipeline. This reduces pressure in the line and leaves other households, especially those at the end of the network, with little or no water.

Societies flagged shortage

According to reports, a federation of housing societies submitted a list of 36 affected societies to PCMC and asked for inspections. Residents say some offenders have resumed pumping after the seizures, either by reconnecting equipment or by installing new pumps.

Residents have demanded surprise inspections, penalties and disconnection of water connections for repeat offenders, along with a time-bound response to complaints.

What PCMC has said

Mahesh Baride, executive engineer at PCMC, said five squads will work in two shifts to stop water wastage and illegal extraction. Each special squad of six personnel will include a junior engineer from the water supply department and will carry out inspections during the morning and evening supply hours.

He also urged residents to report water wastage to the corporation and said action will be taken on complaints.

How residents can help

  • Report illegal pumps or water wastage to the PCMC water supply department or through PCMC’s official complaint channels.
  • Society committees can record low-pressure timings and share them with ward officials. This helps squads target the right lines.
  • Fix overflowing tanks and leaking connections in your own building.

The crackdown comes as the wider Pune region discusses water cuts. Read our update on the Pune water cut and canal committee meeting.
