According to reports, further action is being initiated under food safety regulations. The FDA has warned food businesses to follow the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, store food hygienically and meet licensing, registration and labelling rules.
Why the FDA steps up checks before Diwali
Demand for dry fruits, sweets, mawa and snacks rises sharply in the weeks before Diwali, when they are bought in bulk for gifting. Food safety departments usually increase inspections during this period to check for poor storage, wrong labelling and adulteration.
How to buy safe dry fruits and sweets this Diwali
- Check the label. Packaged food should show the FSSAI licence or registration number, manufacturing or packing date, best-before date and the manufacturer’s address.
- Look and smell. Avoid dry fruits that look unusually shiny, damp, mouldy or have a stale or rancid smell.
- Buy from trusted shops that have a high turnover, so stock is fresh.
- Be careful with loose, heavily discounted packs sold during the festive rush.
- Store well at home. Keep dry fruits in airtight containers away from moisture.
- If you suspect a food safety problem, report it to the FDA or through FSSAI’s official consumer grievance channels.
