A few years ago, the Metro was something Punekars joked about. Now it’s how a lot of the city gets to work. Office-goers ride it from Pimpri to Shivajinagar, students get off at Deccan and Garware College, and on weekends families use it to reach Swargate, Mandai or the railway station without worrying about parking. If you’re new to Pune, or have just never got around to trying it, this guide covers the routes, stations, timings, fares and what’s coming next.
We update this guide whenever Maha Metro changes timings or fares, or opens a new section. Last checked: October 29, 2026.
The network in short
Two lines are running right now, both operated by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha Metro), a joint venture of the Centre and the state. The Purple Line runs from PCMC Bhavan to Swargate, and the Aqua Line from Vanaz to Ramwadi. Together they cover about 33 km and 28 stations, and they meet at District Court (also called Civil Court) in Shivajinagar.
Purple Line: PCMC Bhavan to Swargate
This is the north–south line. It starts at PCMC Bhavan in Pimpri, follows the old Pune–Mumbai highway through Kasarwadi, Dapodi and Khadki, and goes underground at Shivajinagar to reach the old city and Swargate. The last stretch, from District Court to Swargate, opened in September 2024, and with it Pimpri-Chinchwad finally got a direct link to the Swargate bus stand.
Stations, north to south:
- PCMC Bhavan
- Sant Tukaram Nagar
- Nashik Phata (Bhosari)
- Kasarwadi
- Phugewadi
- Dapodi
- Bopodi
- Khadki
- Shivajinagar
- District Court (Civil Court), interchange with the Aqua Line
- Kasba Peth (Budhwar Peth)
- Mahatma Phule Mandai
- Swargate
The five stations from Shivajinagar onwards are underground. Mandai is handy for Tulshibaug and Laxmi Road, Kasba Peth is a short walk from Dagdusheth Ganpati, and Swargate connects with the MSRTC bus stand and PMPML depot if you’re catching an ST bus out of town.
Aqua Line: Vanaz to Ramwadi
The east–west line starts at Vanaz on Paud Road, passes Deccan and the railway station, and ends at Ramwadi near Nagar Road via Kalyani Nagar. It was completed in March 2024, when the Ruby Hall Clinic–Ramwadi section opened.
- Vanaz
- Anand Nagar
- Ideal Colony
- Nal Stop
- Garware College
- Deccan Gymkhana
- Chhatrapati Sambhaji Udyan
- PMC Bhavan
- District Court (Civil Court), interchange with the Purple Line
- Mangalwar Peth (RTO)
- Pune Railway Station
- Ruby Hall Clinic
- Bund Garden
- Yerwada
- Kalyani Nagar
- Ramwadi
A couple of names confuse first-timers. Ideal Colony is on Paud Road near Paud Phata, and Nal Stop is the closest station to SNDT College on Karve Road. At Pune Railway Station there’s a walkway towards the main station, which beats an auto ride with luggage.
Changing lines at District Court
This is currently the only interchange. Purple Line platforms are underground and Aqua Line platforms are elevated, so you change by escalator or lift within the same station. In office hours the escalators get crowded, so allow five to seven minutes. If your ticket was booked to your final stop, you don’t need a new one.
Timings
Trains run from about 6 am to 11 pm on both lines. Maha Metro pushed the closing time from 10 pm to 11 pm in January 2025 after commuters asked for later trains. At peak hours you’ll get a train every six to eight minutes; at quieter times, expect about ten minutes between trains.
During big events like Ganeshotsav, the Metro usually runs late into the night. Maha Metro announces special timings on its official social media handles a few days ahead.
Fares
Fares depend on distance. A hop of a station or two starts at ₹10, and the longest journeys cost roughly ₹30 to ₹35. That makes PCMC to Swargate, or Vanaz to Ramwadi, cheaper than an auto over the same distance.
Maha Metro has run a few concessions over time. Students can get 30% off with a student pass issued against a college ID. A 30% weekend discount for all commuters has been offered in the past, and a ₹100 day pass for unlimited rides was introduced in 2023, which is useful if you’re covering several stops in a day. These offers change, so check at the counter or on the official Pune Metro app before you travel.
Buying tickets
Every station has a ticket counter, and the staff there are usually happy to help with routes. The quickest way, though, is a QR ticket on the official Pune Metro app, which you simply scan at the gate. Regular commuters can use a stored-value smart card and tap in and out. Hold on to your ticket or QR until you exit, because you’ll need it at the gate again.
What’s coming next
The big one is Line 3, from Maan in Hinjewadi to District Court in Shivajinagar. PMRDA is building the 23-km elevated line, with 23 stations, through a public-private partnership. The first phase, from Maan to Balewadi, has safety clearance, and reports this week suggested services could begin in early November, but an official launch date hasn’t been announced. Our latest update on the Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar Metro Line 3 launch has the details.
Other projects in the works:
- PCMC Bhavan to Nigdi (Bhakti Shakti): a Purple Line extension of about 4.4 km, under construction.
- Swargate to Katraj: an underground Purple Line extension of about 5.5 km, approved and under way.
- Vanaz to Chandni Chowk: a short Aqua Line extension of about 1 km, under construction.
- Ramwadi to Wagholi (Vithalwadi): an Aqua Line extension of about 11.6 km, approved under Phase 2.
- Khadakwasla to Kharadi: a new east–west corridor approved under Phase 2.
Completion dates for these have moved more than once, so treat any target year as tentative until trial runs start.
A few tips
If you can, avoid Shivajinagar and District Court between 8:30 and 10:30 am and 6 and 8 pm; those are the worst hours at the interchange. Most stations have two-wheeler parking, but PCMC, Vanaz and Ramwadi fill up early on weekdays. Several stations have feeder buses and e-bikes for the last mile; our Pune traffic and Metro updates cover diversions and changes. Bags are screened at entry, so travelling light gets you through faster.
