Pune, 29th October 2026: The opening of the Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar Metro Line 3, the corridor that will link Pune’s IT hub with the city centre, is uncertain again. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned November 3 visit to Pune district has been postponed, and the inauguration of the first phase of the line was expected to be part of that visit.

What has happened

According to a report published on October 23, 2026, the Prime Minister’s visit, which was to include the opening of the Prerna Sthal memorial at Vidya Pratishthan in Baramati, has been postponed. November 16 is being discussed as a possible new date, but neither the visit nor the metro inauguration has been officially confirmed. The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), which is executing the project, did not respond to requests for comment.

Metro Line 3 at a glance

  • Route: Maan (Hinjewadi Phase 3) to District Court, Shivajinagar
  • Length: about 23.3 km, fully elevated
  • Stations: 23
  • Project authority: PMRDA
  • Model: Public-private partnership (DBFOT) with a Tata Realty–Siemens joint venture
  • Interchanges: Shivajinagar and District Court, with the existing Pune Metro lines

How close is the line to opening?

In July 2026, the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) gave provisional clearance to the first stretch of about 12 km. Reports say 17 of the 23 stations have received clearance so far. The first phase is expected to run 12 stations from Maan to the R K Laxman Museum in Balewadi. The rest of the line, up to District Court, is expected to follow later.

The project was originally due to be completed by March 2025 and has missed several deadlines because of construction hold-ups and clearance delays. Earlier this year, June 15 was announced as a launch date for the first section, but that did not happen.

Key stations on the first phase

The first section is expected to cover stations in the Maan, Hinjewadi Phase 1 and 2, Wakad Chowk, Mahalunge and Balewadi areas. For lakhs of IT employees, this would offer an alternative to the heavily congested Hinjewadi–Wakad roads.

What it means for commuters

  • Daily IT commuters from Wakad, Baner, Balewadi and Aundh are likely to benefit the most once the full line opens.
  • Once the line reaches Shivajinagar, passengers will be able to change to the existing Pune Metro network for Pimpri-Chinchwad, Swargate and the Vanaz–Ramwadi route.
  • Until the official opening, there is no passenger service on Line 3. Beware of social media posts claiming fixed opening dates that are not from PMRDA or the government.

What happens next

An official announcement of the new inauguration date is awaited. We will update this article as soon as PMRDA or the government confirms the opening date, fares and timings.
