Pune, 6th November 2026: The monsoon filled most of Pune’s dams, but the region is starting the dry season with noticeably less water than last year. On November 1, the 728 dams in the Pune revenue region held 11,955.87 million cubic metres (MCM) of live storage, or 77.81% of their design capacity of 15,366.09 MCM, according to figures reported by the Free Press Journal.

On the same date last year, storage stood at 92.81%.

CategoryStorage on Nov 1
Major projects84.40%
Medium projects66.28%
Minor projects33.78%
All 728 dams77.81%

The low level in minor projects matters for villages and small towns that rely on local tanks and small dams for drinking water and rabi irrigation.

The Khadakwasla system, which supplies Pune city, holds about 24 TMC across Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar.

Why a full monsoon still leaves a gap

Large volumes are released from the Khadakwasla system into canals for farming after the monsoon, and evaporation rises as October and November turn hot in the afternoon. The state also keeps 10% of available water as a drinking water reserve.

That is why the PMC is weighing alternate-day supply even after a good rainy season. Read our full report on Pune’s 13 TMC quota and possible alternate-day supply, and check the Pune weather forecast for the week ahead.
