You can renew a Maharashtra driving licence online on sarathi.parivahan.gov.in: choose Maharashtra, select “Apply for DL Renewal”, fill in your licence details, upload a medical certificate if you are over 40, pay the fee and track the application. Most renewals do not need a visit to the RTO, though the office may call you for biometrics or a photo.

You can apply up to one year before the expiry date or within one year after it.

When to renew

  • A private (non-transport) licence issued to someone under 30 is valid till age 40.
  • After that, renewals are usually for 10 years until age 50, and five years at a time after that.
  • There is a grace period of one year after expiry for renewal without a fresh test. In the grace period, the licence is not valid for driving, so renew on time.
  • If more than a year has passed since expiry, you may have to take the driving test again.

Step by step

  1. Open sarathi.parivahan.gov.in and choose Maharashtra.
  2. Under Driving Licence services, pick “DL Renewal”.
  3. Enter your licence number and date of birth, and confirm the details.
  4. Upload Form 1 (self-declaration of physical fitness) and, if you are over 40, Form 1A (medical certificate from a registered doctor).
  5. Upload your photo and signature if asked.
  6. Pay the fee online.
  7. Book an RTO slot only if the system asks for one.
  8. Track the status on Sarathi; the smart card licence is posted to your address.

Fees

Fees are set under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules. Renewal and the smart card attract separate charges, and renewing after the grace period carries an extra late fee for each year of delay. Sarathi shows the exact total before payment.

Documents to keep ready

  • Your current driving licence
  • Aadhaar linked to your mobile number
  • Form 1, and Form 1A if you are over 40
  • Passport-size photo and signature scan
Tip: Download DigiLocker or mParivahan and keep your licence there. A licence in these apps is accepted during police checks.

Fees and rules are set under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules and the state’s RTO procedures and may change. Check the fee shown on Sarathi before paying.
