You can apply for a learner licence in Maharashtra online on the Parivahan Sarathi portal (sarathi.parivahan.gov.in) and, if you use Aadhaar authentication, take the test from home without visiting the RTO. Fees are about ₹151 for the licence plus ₹50 for the test. You must answer at least 60% of the questions correctly, and the licence is valid for six months.
That is the short answer. Below is the full process for Pune and the rest of Maharashtra, the documents you need, and what to do if you fail.
Who can apply
| Vehicle | Minimum age |
|---|---|
| Gearless two-wheeler up to 50 cc | 16 years, with parent’s or guardian’s consent |
| Motorcycle with gear, car (light motor vehicle) | 18 years |
| Transport or commercial vehicles | 20 years, plus a permanent driving licence for the lighter class |
Documents you need
- Aadhaar card (needed for the online, faceless route)
- Proof of age, such as a birth certificate, school leaving certificate, passport or PAN
- Proof of address, such as Aadhaar, passport, voter ID or a utility bill
- Recent passport-size photograph and signature (scanned)
- Medical certificate in Form 1A if you are over 40, or applying for a transport vehicle; self-declaration in Form 1 for others
Step-by-step: apply online
- Go to sarathi.parivahan.gov.in and select Maharashtra as your state.
- Choose “Apply for Learner Licence”.
- Pick “Submit via Aadhaar Authentication” if you want to take the test from home. Choose the non-Aadhaar option only if you plan to visit the RTO.
- Enter your details, choose the vehicle classes (for example MCWG for motorcycle with gear and LMV for car), and select your RTO, such as MH-12 Pune or MH-14 Pimpri-Chinchwad.
- Upload your photo, signature and documents.
- Pay the fee online. The test fee is charged per attempt.
- Watch the road safety tutorial video shown on the portal, then start the online test.
The learner licence test
The test is multiple choice and covers road signs, traffic rules and safe driving. You need to answer at least 60% correctly. With Aadhaar authentication you can take it on a computer or phone with a webcam from home; the portal records you during the test. Once you pass, you can download and print the learner licence yourself.
If you fail, you can retake the test after paying the test fee again. Many guides say a gap of about seven days applies before you can retake it.
After the learner licence
Your learner licence is valid for six months. You can apply for a permanent driving licence after 30 days and before it expires, by booking a driving test slot at your RTO on the same portal. While on a learner licence, display an “L” sign on the vehicle and ride or drive only with a licensed person accompanying you where required.
Maharashtra is also moving towards automated driving test tracks; read about the road safety institute planned at Saswad. For a sense of how strictly rules are enforced, see how Pune RTO checked 929 buses before Diwali.
Fees and rules are set by the Maharashtra Transport Department and can change; check the amount shown on the Sarathi portal before paying.
