If you have lost money to an online fraud, call the national cyber helpline 1930 or file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in immediately, ideally within the first hour. Fast reporting lets police and banks freeze the money in the fraudster’s account before it is withdrawn. Then inform your bank in writing within three working days, which protects your right to a refund under RBI rules.
Every minute counts. Here is exactly what to do, in order.
What to do in the first hour
- Call 1930. Give the transaction ID, amount, date and time, the account or UPI ID the money went to, and your bank details.
- File online at cybercrime.gov.in under “Report Financial Fraud” if you cannot get through, and note the acknowledgement number.
- Block your card, UPI and net banking through your bank’s app or customer care.
- Email your bank branch and customer care with the transaction details, so there is a written, time-stamped report.
- Save evidence: screenshots of messages, call logs, the fake website or app, and bank SMS alerts.
How the money gets frozen
Complaints go into the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System, which links police, banks, payment companies, RBI and NPCI. Your complaint is flagged to the nodal officer of the bank that received the money. If the money is still there, the bank puts a hold on it. If it has moved, the alert follows it to the next account, and so on.
This is why the “golden hour” matters: fraudsters move money through several mule accounts within minutes. Pimpri-Chinchwad police recently arrested a suspect who allegedly used over 150 such accounts; read about the Dubai-linked cyber fraud case.
Can you get the money back?
Often, yes, but not instantly. Money frozen in a fraudster’s account is usually released to the victim only after a court order, once police have verified the case. In practice this can take weeks or months, so follow up with your local cyber police station using your complaint number.
Your rights against your bank
Under the RBI’s 2017 rules on unauthorised electronic transactions:
| When you report to your bank | Your liability |
|---|---|
| Fraud due to the bank’s own lapse | Zero, whenever reported |
| Third-party breach, reported within 3 working days | Zero |
| Third-party breach, reported in 4 to 7 working days | Capped at ₹5,000 to ₹25,000, depending on account type |
| After 7 working days | As per the bank’s board-approved policy |
Important: these protections cover unauthorised transactions. If you shared an OTP, PIN or approved a UPI collect request yourself, the bank may treat it as your negligence, so reporting to 1930 and the police becomes even more important.
