You can check and pay a Pune traffic e-challan online at mahatrafficechallan.gov.in or in the Pune Traffic Police (PTP) app, using your vehicle number or challan number. You can also pay at a traffic division office. If fines stay unpaid, Pune police send a 30-day notice and can then propose suspension of your driving licence to the RTO.

Pune has a large backlog: nearly 19 lakh vehicle owners had unpaid fines earlier this year, Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil said.

How to check your e-challan

  1. Go to mahatrafficechallan.gov.in or open the PTP app.
  2. Enter your vehicle number (and the last digits of the chassis or engine number if asked), or the challan number from the SMS.
  3. View the list of challans, with the date, place, offence and photo where available.

How to pay

  • Online: pay on mahatrafficechallan.gov.in or the PTP app by UPI, card or net banking, and download the receipt.
  • In person: at the nearest traffic division office, where e-challan machines accept QR, debit and credit cards.
Beware of fake challan messages: Pune police have said they will never send APK files or ask for OTPs. Do not click links in unknown SMS or WhatsApp messages claiming you have a fine. Check only on the official website or app.

What happens if you do not pay

Pune Traffic Police have said owners with unpaid fines will get notices by SMS from the short code MHPECH-G asking them to pay within 30 days. If they do not, police can send a proposal to suspend the driver’s licence to the RTO, and the case can be sent to court.

If you think a challan is wrong

If the vehicle in the photo is not yours, the number plate was misread, or you were not at the spot, raise a grievance with the traffic police through the official e-challan system or the PTP app, or visit a traffic division office with your vehicle papers and evidence. Do not simply ignore it, as unpaid challans can block services like transferring vehicle ownership.

National Lok Adalats are held from time to time where pending traffic fines for minor offences can be settled, often with relief on the amount. Serious offences such as drunk driving are excluded. Watch for announcements by the Pune District Legal Services Authority.

Fine amounts are set under the Motor Vehicles Act and state notifications and can change. Check the amount shown against your challan on the official site.
