You can apply for a domicile certificate in Maharashtra online on the Aaple Sarkar portal (aaplesarkar.mahaonline.gov.in) under the Revenue Department’s “Age, Nationality and Domicile Certificate” service. You generally need to show at least 15 years of residence in the state. The fee is about ₹50, and the certificate is usually issued in around 15 working days by the Tehsildar or Sub-Divisional Officer.

Students often need it urgently for state-quota admissions in engineering, medical and other courses, so apply well before counselling starts.

Who is eligible

  • People who have lived in Maharashtra for at least 15 years, or
  • Children of parents who are permanent residents of Maharashtra, or
  • Women married to a permanent resident of Maharashtra.

Specific admission rules, such as for medical or engineering quotas, can add their own conditions, so read your admission brochure too.

Documents you need

  • Identity proof: Aadhaar, PAN, passport, voter ID or driving licence
  • Address proof: Aadhaar, utility bill, ration card, property tax receipt or rent agreement
  • Proof of 15 years’ residence: school leaving certificates, school bonafide certificates, old ration cards, property records or similar documents covering the period
  • Age proof for minors: birth certificate or school leaving certificate
  • Self-declaration, and marriage certificate where relevant
  • Passport-size photo

How to apply online

  1. Register on the Aaple Sarkar portal with your mobile number and OTP.
  2. Log in and choose Revenue Department, then Revenue services.
  3. Select “Age, Nationality and Domicile Certificate”.
  4. Fill in the form, upload documents and pay the fee.
  5. Save the application ID and track the status online.
  6. Download the digitally signed certificate once it is approved.

You can also apply at an Aaple Sarkar Seva Kendra or Setu centre at the tehsil office if you need help scanning documents.

Avoid rejection: make sure your name and date of birth are spelt the same way on every document, and that the residence proofs together cover the full 15 years without gaps.

The certificate is generally valid for life unless cancelled. Students preparing for entrance exams can also read our explainers on JEE Main 2027 registration and the 75% rule.

Eligibility for state quotas and documents can vary by admission process or job notice. Check the specific rules of the exam or authority you are applying to.
