Pune, 6th November 2026: Spitting at Swargate Chowk just got expensive. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) collected ₹22,400 in fines from 22 people for spitting and creating unhygienic conditions in the Swargate Chowk area, as part of a drive against public spitting and littering.
The action was carried out by a joint team from the Kasba Peth, Vishrambaugwada and Bibwewadi ward offices under PMC’s Zone 5, under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner Madhav Jagtap, according to Punekar News.
Why Swargate
Swargate is one of the busiest spots in the city, with the MSRTC bus stand, the PMPML hub and the Metro station within a few hundred metres. Thousands of passengers walk through every hour, and the corners of the chowk, bus shelters and Metro staircases are regularly stained with gutkha and paan spit.
The drive will continue
The civic body said spitting spreads disease and spoils the look of the city, and that regular action will continue against individuals and shops found spitting on roads or creating unhygienic conditions. It has appealed to citizens to follow cleanliness rules.
How you can help
