Yes, you can wear a printed T-shirt to JEE Main, as long as it has no metal parts and nothing written on it that could look like exam material. NTA’s dress code is about security, not style: wear light, simple clothes without metal buttons, zips or big accessories, and simple footwear. Watches of every kind, jewellery, belts, bags and electronic items are not allowed inside. Your admit card lists the final rules for your session.

Here is what that means in practice, so you are not stopped at the gate on exam day.

What can I wear to JEE Main?

ItemAllowed?What to know
Printed T-shirt or plain shirtYesAvoid large metal prints, studs or text that could be mistaken for notes
Jeans or trousersYesAvoid metal buttons, zips and rivets where possible; simple track pants are the safest
Salwar-kameez, kurtaYesKeep it simple, without heavy embellishment
Full sleevesGenerally yesExpect them to be checked during frisking
Sweater or jacketGenerally yes in winterMust not have metal zips, buttons or large accessories
ShoesSimple footwearNo metal parts; avoid thick soles. Slippers or sandals are often recommended
BeltNoLeave it at home
Jewellery, rings, earringsNoRemove before you leave
Caps, scarves (non-religious)AvoidCan be asked to remove them

Because the January session falls in winter, many students ask about jackets. Recent instructions have generally allowed sweaters and jackets without metal parts, but expect extra checking. A simple sweater or hoodie without a zip is the least likely to cause trouble.

Is a watch allowed in JEE Main?

No. All watches are banned, including analogue watches, smartwatches and calculator watches. The computer screen shows a timer for the remaining time, so you do not need one.

What about religious or customary items?

Candidates wearing religious or customary attire, such as a turban, hijab, kara or kirpan, are generally allowed but must report early for checking. Sikh candidates have been permitted to carry the kara and kirpan. If this applies to you, reach the centre well before the reporting time.

What documents should I carry to JEE Main?

  1. Printed admit card, downloaded from jeemain.nta.nic.in (a clear colour print is recommended).
  2. Passport-size photographs, the same as the one uploaded in your application, as instructed on the admit card.
  3. Original valid photo ID, such as Aadhaar, PAN card, passport, voter ID or driving licence.
  4. PwD/PwBD certificate, if you are claiming relaxation.
  5. Any additional document your admit card specifically asks for.

What items are banned at the JEE Main centre?

  • Mobile phones, smartwatches, earphones, Bluetooth devices, calculators and any electronic gadget.
  • Bags, wallets, purses and handbags.
  • Books, notes, printed or written papers, geometry boxes and pencil boxes (B.Arch drawing candidates get separate instructions).
  • Food and drinks, except for diabetic candidates under conditions NTA specifies.
  • Any metal item.

Most centres do not have safe storage for phones and bags, so leave them at home or with a parent outside.

Reporting time and gate closing

NTA prints the reporting time and gate-closing time on your admit card. Late entry is not allowed after the gate closes, under any circumstances. Plan to reach the centre at least an hour before the reporting time to allow for frisking, biometric verification and finding your lab.

For students in Pune, centres are spread across the city and Pimpri-Chinchwad, and traffic on routes like the Hinjewadi corridor, Nagar Road or Katraj can be unpredictable in the morning. Do a trial trip to your centre a day or two before the exam.

A 10-point exam day checklist

  1. Admit card printed.
  2. Photographs as specified.
  3. Original photo ID.
  4. Simple clothes without metal.
  5. Simple footwear.
  6. No watch, belt or jewellery.
  7. Transparent water bottle only if your admit card permits it.
  8. Medicines or diabetic items only as permitted.
  9. Reach early.
  10. Read every instruction on the admit card the night before.
