Pune, 2nd November 2026: Pune Police have issued their firecracker rules for Diwali, and the most important one for families is the timing. Noise-making firecrackers cannot be burst between 10 pm and 6 am anywhere in the city. In silence zones, such as areas around hospitals, they cannot be burst at all.
The order, issued by the office of the Commissioner of Police, Pune City, also bans traditional “atom bomb” crackers outright and limits the noise level of every cracker sold.
The rules at a glance
- Time limit: no noise-making crackers from 10 pm to 6 am.
- Silence zones: no crackers within 100 metres of hospitals, educational institutions and courts, at any time.
- Banned outright: manufacture, possession and sale of traditional atom bomb crackers. Licensed vendors also cannot sell imported or foreign-made crackers.
- Roads and public places: no bursting of crackers, flying of fire balloons or launching of rockets on public streets, lanes and footpaths, or within 10 metres of roads, highways, bridges and ghats.
- Near stalls: no bursting within 50 metres of authorised temporary firecracker stalls.
Decibel limits
| Type | Maximum noise |
|---|---|
| Single cracker | 125 dB (measured 4 metres away) |
| String of 50 to 100 crackers | 115 dB |
| String of more than 100 crackers | 110 dB |
| Larger strings | 105 dB |
Rules for sellers
Temporary licences for firecracker stalls are valid from 6 November to 5 December 2026. Sales are not allowed after 5 December, and vendors must return unsold stock to a licensed warehouse or wholesaler. Violations can lead to seizure of stock and action under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Explosives Act, 1884, the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, and the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000.
How to report a violation
Call 112 if crackers are being burst after 10 pm, in a silence zone or in a way that endangers people. Give the exact location. In housing societies, it often helps to raise the issue with the managing committee first, since most societies set their own rules for terraces and common areas.
A practical Diwali in Pune
Lakshmi Puja falls on Sunday, 8 November, with Narak Chaturdashi celebrations the same morning, so the night of 8 November is when most bursting happens. Keep a bucket of water and sand handy, light crackers in the open and never hold them in your hand, keep children supervised, and avoid synthetic clothes near fire. Pet owners should keep animals indoors with windows closed.
Air quality in Pune usually dips sharply in the Diwali week. Check the live readings on our Pune AQI today page, especially if anyone at home has asthma. For the full festival calendar, see Diwali 2026 dates in Maharashtra.
This article summarises the police order as reported. Rules in Pimpri-Chinchwad are issued separately by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissionerate.
