Pune, 1st November 2026: Thousands of aspiring teachers across Maharashtra finally have the next step in front of them. The state education department has published the general merit list for the interview-based category of teacher recruitment on the Pavitra portal, recommending 11,493 candidates for 10,328 vacancies in schools run by private managements. Interviews and teaching aptitude tests will be held between 3 and 25 November.

Education Commissioner Sachindra Pratap Singh announced the list at a press conference on Saturday, 31 October.

The big change: only 10 marks for managements

For years, candidates have complained that the interview stage in private aided schools was where merit could be overridden. This time, the state has fixed the marking criteria. School managements will get only 10 marks for the interview component. The government says this will curb arbitrary selection and make the process more transparent, since the rest of the weight comes from the candidate’s Teacher Aptitude and Intelligence Test (TAIT) score.

The numbers

  • Vacancies in the interview category: 10,328
  • Candidates recommended: 11,493
  • Total preferences recommended: 27,145
  • Candidates who locked preferences in this category: 1,31,505

By class level, the recommendations break down as follows:

Class levelPostsPreferences recommended
Classes 1 to 51,6094,478
Classes 6 to 84,50510,792
Classes 9 and 104,21411,884

The TAIT 2025 exam was held online from 27 May to 5 June 2025. Of 2,28,808 registered candidates, 2,11,308 appeared.

What recommended candidates must do now

  1. Log in to the Pavitra portal and check your status. Candidates and managements are also being informed by SMS.
  2. Download the management-wise merit list from the Download section of the portal.
  3. Contact the appointing authority, that is, the school management, for the interview and teaching demonstration schedule.
  4. Keep your original documents ready: TAIT scorecard, D.Ed or B.Ed certificates, degree marksheets, caste and non-creamy layer certificates where applicable, and identity proof.
  5. Prepare a short demonstration lesson for your subject and class level. Teaching aptitude tests usually involve teaching a topic to a panel or a class for a few minutes.

The non-interview category

A separate general merit list was published on 27 August for 13,119 vacancies in local body and private schools that chose recruitment without interviews, followed by a converted-round list for 4,390 posts left unfilled under parallel reservation. Candidates with complaints about the non-interview category can approach the state-level grievance redressal committee in the prescribed format by 7 November 2026.

Why this matters

Teacher vacancies have been a long-running issue in Maharashtra’s aided schools. A transparent round that fills over 10,000 posts in one go will matter in classrooms from Pune to Gadchiroli.
