India does not observe daylight saving time, so Indian Standard Time (IST, UTC+5:30) stays the same all year. But the time gap with the US, UK and Europe has just changed. The US moved its clocks back one hour on Sunday, 1 November 2026, and the UK and most of Europe did so on 25 October. India is now 10.5 hours ahead of New York, 13.5 hours ahead of California and 5.5 hours ahead of London, one hour more than in summer.
If you work with US clients from Hinjewadi or Kharadi, or call family abroad, your evening calls have just shifted an hour later on the Indian clock.

When did daylight saving end in 2026?

|---|---|---|
| United States (most states) | Sunday, 1 November 2026, at 2 am local | Sunday, 14 March 2027 |

Will India have daylight saving time?
No. India has used a single time zone, IST, since 1947 and does not change clocks in summer or winter. Because most of India is close to the tropics, the length of the day does not vary enough to make daylight saving worthwhile. India briefly used daylight saving during the 1962 war with China and the 1965 and 1971 wars with Pakistan, to save electricity, but has not done so since.
There has been a long debate about a second time zone for the north-east, where the sun rises much earlier than in Pune or Mumbai, but no change has been made.
Is the US getting rid of daylight saving time?
Not yet. The US House of Representatives passed the Sunshine Protection Act on 14 July 2026 by 308 votes to 117. The bill would make daylight time permanent, but it has not been passed by the Senate, so it is not law. Until it is, the US will keep switching clocks in March and November.
For the knock-on effect on sport, note that F1 and cricket start times in IST also shift; our guide to the India vs New Zealand ODI timings shows how New Zealand’s summer time makes matches start at 7:30 am in India.
