New Delhi, 31st October 2026: Cyclone Arnab has faded into a low-pressure area after crossing the Andhra Pradesh coast, but the Bay of Bengal is not done yet. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported a fresh low-pressure area over the South Andaman Sea, which may bring another round of heavy rain to coastal Andhra Pradesh early next week.
Satellite images of the two systems were among India’s top Google searches this week.
What Arnab left behind
Arnab, which reached Very Severe Cyclonic Storm strength, crossed the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coast on Wednesday, 28 October. Kakinada was among the places that saw damage. Five deaths were reported in Andhra Pradesh, along with heavy damage to crops, houses, roads and power lines in several coastal districts. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu announced relief and compensation and sought help from the Centre.
After landfall, the system moved inland and weakened steadily over south Chhattisgarh and south Odisha. Its rain spread over a wide area. Odisha reported heavy rain in at least 17 southern districts, Kolkata saw flight cancellations, and West Bengal, Telangana, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh received rain and thunderstorms. Higher reaches of Sikkim, such as Kupup and the Gnathang valley, got fresh snow.
The new system
In its marine bulletin on 29 October, the IMD reported a low-pressure area over the South Andaman Sea and nearby areas. It is likely to move west-northwest and concentrate into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal around 31 October, and may then move towards the Andhra Pradesh coast over the following two days.
The IMD has forecast heavy rain on 2 and 3 November in coastal Andhra districts including Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Anakapalli, Kakinada, Konaseema, East and West Godavari, Eluru and Krishna. The IMD has not said that the system will become a cyclone. Its strength and track will depend on later bulletins. Fishermen have been asked to follow marine warnings.
What about Pune and Maharashtra?
The current IMD forecasts for the new system name only Andhra Pradesh. During Arnab, Pune had cloudy skies and cooler mornings rather than heavy rain; our report on Pune weather after Cyclone Arnab has the details. If you are travelling to Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad or Kolkata from Pune next week, check your flight or train status before leaving. Our Pune airport winter schedule post lists current routes.
This is a developing weather story. We will update this article as the IMD issues fresh bulletins.
