You can apply for a new ration card in Maharashtra online through the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department’s portal (mahafood.gov.in, with status on rcms.mahafood.gov.in) or at an Aaple Sarkar Seva Kendra. You need Aadhaar for every family member, residence proof and an income certificate. Approval usually takes 15 to 30 working days after verification.

In Pune city, applications are handled by the rationing office for your area, so make sure the address on your documents matches.

Types of ration cards

CardWho it is for
Antyodaya (AAY)The poorest households; highest grain entitlement
Priority Household (PHH)Eligible households under the National Food Security Act
Non-priority (often white)Families above the eligibility limits; used mainly as ID and address proof

Your card category depends on annual family income and other criteria fixed by the state; the rationing office decides it after verification.

Documents you need

  • Aadhaar cards of the head of the family and all members
  • Proof of residence in Maharashtra, such as an electricity bill, rent agreement or property tax receipt
  • Income certificate of the family
  • Passport-size photo of the head of the family (usually the eldest woman)
  • Bank passbook copy
  • If you are moving from another state or district, the surrender or cancellation certificate of your old card

How to apply

  1. Visit the department’s online services portal and register with your mobile number and Aadhaar.
  2. Choose the option for a new ration card.
  3. Fill in details of every family member, income and address.
  4. Upload the documents and submit.
  5. Note the application number. The rationing inspector may visit or call for verification.
  6. Track the status on rcms.mahafood.gov.in using the application number.

If online submission does not work, an Aaple Sarkar Seva Kendra or the local rationing office can submit it for you for a small service charge.

Common reasons for delay

  • A family member is already on another card (each person can be on only one card)
  • Address or name mismatch between Aadhaar and other documents
  • Missing surrender certificate when shifting from another place

A ration card is also useful for other services, such as the government’s LPG schemes; see the current LPG cylinder price in Pune.

Eligibility and income limits are set by the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Department and can change. Confirm with your local rationing office.
