Why LPG became so expensive in 2026
The big jumps started in March. On 7 March 2026, domestic LPG went up by ₹60 a cylinder and commercial LPG by ₹114.50, after the conflict involving Iran disrupted tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, Deccan Chronicle reported. India imports a large share of its LPG, and most of those imports pass through that route, so higher shipping and insurance costs fed straight into the price.
Commercial cylinders took the hardest hit because they carry market-linked pricing. Domestic cylinders are revised less often and more gently, which is why the household rate has changed only three times this year while the commercial rate has changed almost every month.
Several restaurants and small eateries cut menus or hours during the worst of the shortage earlier this year. The government asked homes with piped gas to shift from LPG, told refineries to maximise LPG output and looked for import sources outside West Asia.
When does the LPG price change next?
Oil marketing companies (Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum) review LPG prices on the first day of every month. The next revision is due on 1 December 2026. Domestic prices are not always changed at each revision; commercial prices usually are.
How much LPG is in a 14.2 kg cylinder?
A domestic cylinder holds 14.2 kg of gas by weight. Because LPG is lighter than water, that is roughly 26 to 28 litres in liquid form, depending on the propane and butane mix and the temperature. Cylinders are sold by weight, not by litre, so always check the net weight printed on the seal if you suspect underfilling.
