Pune, 6th November 2026: Pune’s biggest Hindustani classical music festival will not be in December this time. The 72nd Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav will be held over five days from Wednesday, January 13 to Sunday, January 17, 2027, at the Fergusson College ground in Shivajinagar.
The dates and venue were announced by Srinivas Joshi, working president of the organising Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal, as reported by Sakal and The Bridge Chronicle. It is the first time the festival will be held at Fergusson College.
Why January and why Fergusson
The festival usually takes place in December. This year the Fergusson College ground is already booked for the Pune Book Festival in December, so the organisers moved Sawai to January.
The venue was settled after talks with the Deccan Education Society, which runs Fergusson College and has promised full cooperation. The organisers said the central location will make it easier for listeners to reach, a real plus for those who used to make the late-night trip back from Mukund Nagar.
A festival that keeps moving
The festival began at Renuka Swaroop Prashala and spent about 35 years at the New English School ground in Ramanbaug, where generations of Punekars sat through all-night sessions. It moved to the Maharashtriya Mandal sports complex in Mukund Nagar in 2019 and stayed there for five editions, not counting the two years hit by COVID.
What is not announced yet
The artist line-up, daily timings, ticket prices and season pass details have not been announced. The organisers have said programme details will follow. Fergusson College ground is close to Deccan and Shivajinagar, so the Metro and PMPML buses on FC Road and JM Road will be the easiest options once the timings are out.
