Why mandi prices are often below MSP

MSP is only guaranteed when a government agency buys your crop. Soybean and tur in Maharashtra are bought through NAFED or the state marketing federation at selected centres, and cotton through the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI). When these centres open late, have limits on quantity per farmer, or reject crops over moisture limits, farmers end up selling to traders below MSP.

How to sell at MSP

  1. Register at the procurement portal or centre for your crop when the state announces it, with your 7/12 extract, crop sowing record (e-Peek Pahani), Aadhaar and bank details.
  2. Dry your produce to the required moisture level; soybean and cotton are often rejected for high moisture.
  3. Take the produce on your allotted date and keep the receipt. Payment goes to your bank account.

Rabi growers can see the new MSP for wheat, gram and mustard, and how to check mandi rates before you sell.

MSP applies only to procurement at government centres. Mandi prices can differ; check with your APMC or procurement agency before selling.
