Pune, 3rd November 2026: The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) says the 69 km western stretch of the Pune Ring Road was about 30% complete in September 2026, with a target to open it to traffic by December 2027. The eastern side is planned for completion by December 2028.

The ring road, about 170 km long in total, is meant to take heavy vehicles and through traffic away from Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad by linking the highways around the city.

MSRDC executive engineer Ajit Patil was quoted on these targets. Officials have said contractors face penalties if they miss deadlines.

Tunnels and bridges

The western stretch runs through hilly country, so a large share of the work is tunnelling:

  • 15 tunnels with a combined length of about 21 km
  • The longest, about 5.8 km, runs behind Sinhagad Fort; around 80% had been excavated by September
  • A 640 m bridge across the Khadakwasla reservoir, the longest on the project, with pillars complete and the bridge expected by August 2027

Which roads it will connect

The ring road is designed to connect nine national highways around Pune, including the routes to Mumbai, Satara, Solapur, Ahilyanagar and Nashik. For Hinjewadi, the western stretch will give traffic heading towards Mumbai a way to skip the city’s internal roads.

The other ring road: PMRDA and PMC

Do not confuse the MSRDC project with the 65 m wide ring road planned by PMRDA and the Pune Municipal Corporation closer to the city. For that road, land is needed in 44 villages (22 under PMRDA and 22 under PMC). Collector Jitendra Dudi said in October that land acquisition was targeted for December, or 15 January at the latest, with construction to start two to three months later and take about three years.

What it means for property buyers

Builders often advertise projects as “near the ring road”. Check which ring road they mean, the exact distance to the nearest planned interchange, and whether that section has funding and a contractor.
