Yes, Cyclone Murasu has led to more than 20 flight cancellations, but only at airports in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, not at Pune. Chennai Airport cancelled 11 IndiGo flights to and from Vijayawada, Rajahmundry, Kadapa and Tiruchirappalli on Monday, 2 November, and about 10 IndiGo flights were cancelled at Vijayawada. If you are flying from Pune to Chennai, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam or any Andhra city in the next two days, check your flight status before you leave home.
Where is Cyclone Murasu and when will it make landfall?
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) expected Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu to cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narsapur, near Ongole, between 11:30 pm on Monday, 2 November and 4 am on Tuesday, 3 November. Wind speeds of 100 to 110 km/h, gusting to 120 km/h, were forecast at landfall.
IMD has warned of extremely heavy rain over coastal Andhra Pradesh on Monday and Tuesday, heavy to very heavy rain in parts of Tamil Nadu, and heavy rain in south Odisha on Tuesday and Wednesday. Odisha has stepped up evacuations in vulnerable areas.
Which flights have been cancelled?
| Airport | What has happened (as of 2 Nov, night) |
|---|---|
| Chennai | 11 IndiGo flights cancelled (5 departures, 6 arrivals) on routes to Vijayawada, Rajahmundry, Kadapa and Tiruchirappalli |
| Vijayawada | About 10 IndiGo flights cancelled; some Air India Express and IndiGo routes to Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Chennai disrupted |
| Rajahmundry | IndiGo flights affected, including 6E 7365 and 6E 7366 |
| Tirupati | IndiGo says operations are affected |
| Visakhapatnam | Flights running, but IndiGo warned of long waits on the ground and on board; some services to Hyderabad, Tirupati and Vijayawada hit |
| Pune | No cancellations reported due to the cyclone |
Chennai Airport posted its cancellation list at 9:04 am on 2 November and asked passengers with cancelled flights to contact their airline directly. IndiGo said it is informing affected passengers by SMS on the mobile number used for booking.
Rail travel is also hit. Around 32 train services were suspended in the cyclone zone on Monday, according to reports. If you have a long-distance train from Pune towards Chennai, Vijayawada or Visakhapatnam, check its running status on the NTES app or the Indian Railways enquiry number 139.
Is Pune affected?
Not directly. Pune is roughly 700 km from the landfall zone on the Andhra coast, and the storm’s heaviest rain is forecast for Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Odisha. Your flight could still be affected if it is going to, or connecting through, an airport in the cyclone’s path, or if the aircraft operating your flight is coming from there.

What to do if your flight is cancelled
- Check the airline app or website, and the SMS on your booking number, before leaving for the airport.
- If the airline cancels the flight, you can choose a full refund or an alternative flight. Under DGCA rules, a refund for a cancelled flight should not carry cancellation charges.
- Refunds on cards are usually processed within seven working days; if you booked through a travel agent or portal, the refund goes through them.
- Weather is treated as an “extraordinary circumstance”, so airlines are not required to pay extra compensation, meals or hotels for cyclone cancellations. Many still offer free date changes; ask for one before you pay any change fee.
- Keep screenshots of the cancellation message in case you need to claim travel insurance.
This is a developing story. Flight schedules can change at short notice; always confirm with your airline before leaving for the airport. We will update this article as airlines and IMD issue new information.
