Pune, 29th October 2026: The wait for the Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar Metro just got longer. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned November 3 visit to Pune district has been postponed, and the inauguration of the first phase of Metro Line 3 was expected to happen during that visit.

A report published on October 23 said the PM’s trip, which was also to include the opening of the Prerna Sthal memorial at Vidya Pratishthan in Baramati, had been put off. November 16 is being discussed as a possible new date. Neither the visit nor the Metro launch has been officially confirmed, and the report said the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), which is executing the project, did not respond to requests for comment.

How ready is the line?

In July 2026, the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety gave provisional clearance to the first stretch of about 12 km. Reports say 17 of the 23 stations have been cleared so far. The first phase is expected to cover 12 stations from Maan to the R K Laxman Museum in Balewadi, passing through the Hinjewadi Phase 1 and 2, Wakad Chowk and Mahalunge areas. The remaining section up to District Court will follow later.

The project has a long history of missed deadlines. It was originally meant to be finished by March 2025. Earlier this year, June 15 was announced as the launch date for the first section, and that came and went too.

The basics

  • Route: Maan (Hinjewadi Phase 3) to District Court, Shivajinagar
  • About 23.3 km, fully elevated, 23 stations
  • Built by PMRDA on a public-private partnership model with a Tata Realty–Siemens joint venture
  • Interchanges with the existing Metro at Shivajinagar and District Court

Why commuters care

Anyone who has crawled through Hinjewadi or Wakad Chowk at 9 am knows why this line matters. Lakhs of IT employees from Wakad, Baner, Balewadi and Aundh are hoping it will give them a way around those roads. Once it reaches Shivajinagar, passengers will also be able to switch to the existing Metro lines for Pimpri-Chinchwad, Swargate and the Vanaz–Ramwadi route.

For now, though, there is no passenger service on Line 3. Several social media posts are claiming fixed opening dates. Unless the date comes from PMRDA or the government, treat it with caution. We will update this story once the new date, fares and timings are officially announced.
