Pune, 29th October 2026: The Food and Drug Administration’s Pune division has seized 1,329 kg of roasted gram, almonds and black raisins worth about ₹6.58 lakh from three establishments, days before Diwali.
The FDA acted over suspected labelling problems and possible non-compliance with quality standards. The seizures break down like this:
- 478 kg of roasted gram worth ₹53,775 from M/s Ricky Traders
- 358 kg of almonds worth ₹3.58 lakh from M/s S S Sales Corporation
- 493 kg of black raisins worth ₹2.46 lakh from M/s Nirmal Cold Storage
Reports say further action is being taken under food safety rules. The FDA has also reminded food businesses to follow the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, store food hygienically, and meet licensing, registration and labelling requirements.
Why the checks go up before Diwali
Dry fruits, mawa, sweets and snacks are bought in bulk in the weeks before Diwali, much of it for gifting. That spike in demand is also when poorly stored or wrongly labelled stock tends to slip into the market, which is why food safety teams step up inspections around this time every year.
Buying dry fruits this week
A quick look at the packet tells you a lot. Packaged food should carry an FSSAI licence or registration number, the packing date, a best-before date and the manufacturer’s address. If any of that is missing, think twice.
With loose dry fruits, trust your eyes and nose. Skip anything that looks oddly shiny, damp or mouldy, or smells stale. Shops with steady footfall usually have fresher stock. Be a little careful with heavily discounted loose packs during the festive rush. At home, keep everything in airtight containers away from moisture.
If you come across something that looks like a food safety problem, you can report it to the FDA or through FSSAI’s consumer grievance channels.
