Pune, 5th November 2026: Pune will get its regular water supply on Thursday, 5 November, after Mayor Manjusha Nagpure ordered the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to cancel the weekly Thursday shutdown because of Diwali.
The decision was reported by The Free Press Journal on 4 November. It follows PMC’s own announcement on 29 October that Thursday cuts would be paused for the Diwali period.
“The decision will ensure that the city’s water supply continues on Thursdays during Diwali,” PMC Chief Engineer Nandkishor Jagtap said at the time, according to Punekar News. The civic body pointed to higher demand during the festival from house cleaning, festive cooking and visiting relatives.
Is there a water cut in Pune on 5 November?
No. The Thursday closure planned for 5 November has been called off. Areas that normally go dry on Thursdays should get water at their usual timings.
Supply may still be weak in some pockets. After earlier Thursday shutdowns, residents in several parts of the city reported low pressure and late supply on Fridays. That is because pipelines and storage tanks take time to refill once pumping restarts.
If your building depends on a single morning slot, it is still sensible to fill storage tanks on Wednesday night.
When will the weekly Thursday water cut return?
According to the same report, PMC plans to bring back the weekly Thursday shutdown from next week. That would make Thursday, 12 November the next likely closure day.
PMC has not yet published a revised area-wise schedule. We will update this story and our Pune water cut today page as soon as the civic body issues one.

Why Pune has a water cut every Thursday
PMC started the weekly Thursday shutdown on 15 October as a conservation step. It cited falling storage in the dams that supply the city.
The bigger reason is the allocation. The state Irrigation Department has approved 11.33 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water for Pune for the 2026-27 water year, down from 16 TMC in the previous year. That is a cut of nearly 30% in the water the city can draw.
With less water to share across a growing city, PMC chose a fixed weekly closure instead of daily low-pressure supply, so that stock lasts until the next monsoon.
Which areas are hit hardest by low pressure
Tail-end areas at the edges of the distribution network usually feel shortages first. These are areas far from the main pumping stations and those on higher ground, where water reaches last.
Fringe areas merged into PMC in recent years also depend heavily on tankers when pipeline supply dips. For a background on the city’s water allocation, see our earlier report on Pune’s water supply.
What residents can do during the shutdown weeks
- Store enough water for one day on Wednesday evenings once the Thursday cut returns.
- Check for leaks in overhead tanks and float valves, which waste stored water.
- Report no-water or low-pressure complaints through PMC’s channels, listed in our PMC complaint and helpline guide.
- Housing societies on tanker supply should book early on Wednesdays, as demand peaks before shutdown days.
Festival days and storage: the open questions
Neither announcement names the exact Thursdays covered by the Diwali pause. Bhaubeej falls on Wednesday, 11 November, so the festival is over before the next Thursday, which fits the report that cuts return next week. It has also not shared current storage figures for the Khadakwasla dam group with this decision.
We will update this report when PMC issues its next notice.
