Pune, 5th November 2026: Pune Metro’s second phase will add about 44 km of new lines across four corridors, with Maha Metro setting a five-year target for completion. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone on 3 November, the same day he opened Line 3 from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar.
The corridor details below are from The Free Press Journal’s report of the briefing, and the overall project package is listed on the Prime Minister’s Office release. Phase 2 is estimated to cost about ₹13,500 crore.
The four Phase 2 corridors at a glance
- Line 2A, Vanaz to Chandni Chowk: 1.12 km, 2 stations. A short westward extension of the Aqua Line.
- Line 2B, Ramwadi to Vitthalwadi (Wagholi side): 11.63 km, 5 stations. Extends the Aqua Line east along Nagar Road.
- Line 4, Khadakwasla to Kharadi: 25.52 km, 22 stations. The longest corridor, via Sinhagad Road, Swargate, Hadapsar and Magarpatta.
- Line 4A, Nal Stop to Manik Baug: 6.12 km. A spur towards Warje and Manik Baug. Station count not announced.
Who gains the most
Sinhagad Road and Hadapsar commuters gain the most from Line 4. Today, a trip from Dhayari or Vadgaon to Kharadi’s IT parks means crossing the most congested junctions in the city, including Swargate and Hadapsar Gadital.
Wagholi residents gain from Line 2B, which carries the Aqua Line beyond Ramwadi along Nagar Road, one of Pune’s most crowded arterial roads.
Kothrud and Bavdhan get a small but useful link with Line 2A, which takes the Aqua Line past Vanaz to Chandni Chowk, where the Mumbai-Bengaluru highway meets the city.
Where you will be able to change lines
Swargate, Nal Stop and Kharadi Bypass are planned as interchanges. Swargate already links the Purple Line with the MSRTC bus stand and PMPML’s main depot, so it will become the network’s biggest hub once Line 4 and the Katraj extension are built.
Our report on Swargate-Katraj tunnelling starting in January covers the southern extension.
The Line 4 alignment is still open
Line 4 is planned as an elevated line above Sinhagad Road. Mayor Manjusha Nagpure has proposed running it along the canal or the Mutha river instead, arguing that an elevated line over the new Sinhagad Road flyover would trouble residents. Maha Metro Managing Director Shravan Hardikar said the alignment could be reconsidered.
We covered the debate in detail in Sinhagad Road Metro Line 4 alignment.
What Maha Metro said about the current network
Hardikar said Phase 1 is nearly complete apart from the PCMC to Bhakti Shakti extension, and that peak-hour frequency on existing lines should improve from seven minutes to five. For current timings and fares, see our Pune Metro timings and fares page.
