Births in Pune Municipal Corporation limits are registered with PMC’s birth and death registration department, usually by the hospital, and should be reported within 21 days. Once registered, you can download the birth certificate online through PMC’s website or the Civil Registration System (CRS) portal, or collect it from the ward office.
Since the 2023 amendment to the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, the birth certificate is the main proof of date of birth for school admission, Aadhaar, passports and more, so get it right early.
Who registers the birth?
- Hospital births: the hospital reports the birth to PMC. Ask the hospital for the registration number before discharge.
- Home births: the head of the household must report it at the ward office.
In Pimpri-Chinchwad, PCMC handles registration in the same way.
How to download the certificate
- Open PMC’s citizen services page for birth and death certificates, or the CRS portal (dc.crsorgi.gov.in).
- Search by registration number, or by date of birth, gender and parents’ names.
- Download the digitally signed certificate. It carries a QR code and is valid without a physical signature.
If you cannot find the record, visit the ward office or the PMC birth and death registration office with the hospital discharge papers.
Adding the child’s name
If the name was not decided at the time of registration, you can add it later. Apply at the ward office with the parents’ ID and the existing certificate. The law allows a name to be added within 15 years of registration, so do it before school admission.
Correcting a mistake
For spelling errors or wrong details, apply to the registrar with:
- An application stating the correction
- The current certificate
- Proof of the correct detail, such as the parents’ Aadhaar or hospital records
- An affidavit, if the office asks for one
Late registration
A birth reported after 21 days can still be registered, with a late fee. After 30 days you need an affidavit and the registrar’s permission, and after a year a magistrate’s order may be required.
