Pune, 3rd November 2026: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray has written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asking for urgent action on contaminated drinking water and poor civic services in Hinjawadi, ahead of the inauguration of the Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar Metro Line 3 on Tuesday, 3 November.
In the letter dated 31 October, Thackeray said the Mula river is the main drinking water source for several townships in the Hinjawadi, Maan and Marunji area, and linked its pollution to untreated sewage. Residents were receiving contaminated water, he wrote, warning of “serious health concerns, particularly for children and senior citizens”, the Free Press Journal reported. He had visited Hinjawadi and inspected the river on 25 October.
Yellow water and red worms, residents say
The letter names housing societies and townships including Blue Ridge Township, Mahalunge Township, Park Connect CHS, Park Astra CHS, the Federation of Kohinoor Coral CHS and Fusion Towers Building A. Blue Ridge and Mahalunge are each home to an estimated 25,000 people. Residents have complained of yellow, muddy, foul-smelling water and red worms in supply lines.
What Thackeray has asked for
- A sewage treatment plant of adequate capacity so untreated sewage stops entering the Mula
- Regular water-quality testing and a permanent monitoring system for the river
- Asphalting and resurfacing of roads, including repairs under the Metro corridor
- An effective garbage collection system for societies, townships and businesses
- More traffic police and manpower for Hinjawadi’s congested junctions
Regulators have flagged the problem before
The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has acknowledged gaps in sewage treatment in several villages along the river in a report dated 28 October and has issued notices to PMRDA, gram panchayats and MIDC. In a 10 July 2026 order, the National Green Tribunal’s Western Zone Bench in Pune recorded that untreated domestic wastewater and sewage were polluting the river and sought remedial timelines from PMC, PCMC and PMRDA.
The Chief Minister’s response was not available. With Line 3 bringing new attention to the IT hub, residents are hoping the civic basics get the same push. Read about the Metro projects being launched today and the rain leak at Maan station.
