On a Rs 30,000 monthly salary, your PF deduction is 12% of your PF wages (basic pay plus dearness allowance), not 12% of the full Rs 30,000. If your basic plus DA is Rs 15,000, your PF deduction is Rs 1,800 a month. If your entire Rs 30,000 is counted as PF wages, it is Rs 3,600, or Rs 3,000 if your employer limits contributions to the new Rs 25,000 wage ceiling. Your employer contributes a matching 12%, part of which goes to your pension (EPS).
Here is how the calculation works, with worked examples updated for the wage ceiling change of September 2026.
In this guide
The basic PF formula
| Contribution | Rate | Goes to |
|---|---|---|
| Employee share | 12% of PF wages | Your EPF account |
| Employer share, pension part | 8.33% of PF wages, capped at the wage ceiling | Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) |
| Employer share, PF part | Remainder of the employer’s 12% (3.67% when wages are within the ceiling) | Your EPF account |
| EDLI insurance | 0.5% of PF wages (paid by employer) | Insurance cover |
| Admin charges | 0.5% of PF wages (paid by employer) | EPFO |
“PF wages” means basic pay plus dearness allowance and certain retaining allowances, not your gross salary or CTC.
What changed in 2026: the Rs 25,000 wage ceiling
By a Gazette notification dated 17 September 2026, the Labour Ministry raised the EPF wage ceiling from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 a month, the first change since 2014. This matters in two ways:
- Employees earning PF wages up to Rs 25,000 are now covered compulsorily, and employees between Rs 15,000 and Rs 25,000 who were left out must be enrolled in EPS.
- The maximum employer contribution to EPS rises from Rs 1,250 (8.33% of Rs 15,000) to about Rs 2,083 (8.33% of Rs 25,000).
Wages for 1 to 16 September 2026 used the old ceiling and wages from 17 September used the new one, according to EPFO’s FAQs.

Worked examples for a Rs 30,000 salary
Example 1: Basic plus DA of Rs 15,000
This is a common structure, with half the salary as basic.
| Component | Amount per month |
|---|---|
| Employee PF (12% of 15,000) | Rs 1,800 |
| Employer EPS (8.33% of 15,000) | Rs 1,250 |
| Employer EPF (3.67% of 15,000) | Rs 550 |
| Total going into your EPF account | Rs 2,350 |
Example 2: Entire Rs 30,000 counted as PF wages, contribution limited to the ceiling
| Component | Amount per month |
|---|---|
| Employee PF (12% of 25,000) | Rs 3,000 |
| Employer EPS (8.33% of 25,000) | about Rs 2,083 |
| Employer EPF (balance of 12% of 25,000) | about Rs 917 |
| Total going into your EPF account | about Rs 3,917 |
Example 3: Entire Rs 30,000 counted as PF wages, contribution on full wages
Some employers contribute on full wages above the ceiling, with the employee’s consent.
| Component | Amount per month |
|---|---|
| Employee PF (12% of 30,000) | Rs 3,600 |
| Employer EPS (capped at 8.33% of 25,000) | about Rs 2,083 |
| Employer EPF (12% of 30,000 minus EPS) | about Rs 1,517 |
| Total going into your EPF account | about Rs 5,117 |
Amounts are rounded; EPFO’s system rounds each component to the nearest rupee.
Why is my PF deduction different from these numbers?
- Your basic pay is different. Check the “Basic” and “DA” lines on your payslip; only these count.
- The labour codes’ wage rule. Under the Code on Social Security, 2020, if allowances make up more than half of total pay, the excess is added back to “wages” for PF purposes. Many employers restructured salaries after the labour codes took effect, which increased PF deductions for some employees.
- Voluntary PF. You may have opted for a higher voluntary contribution (VPF).
- Your employer’s policy on contributing on full wages or capping at the ceiling.
- Joining date and EPS eligibility, which affect whether part of the employer’s share goes to EPS.
How much PF for other salaries?
If basic plus DA is 50% of gross salary, the employee deduction is roughly:
| Gross monthly salary | Basic + DA (50%) | Employee PF (12%) |
|---|---|---|
| Rs 15,000 | Rs 7,500 | Rs 900 |
| Rs 25,000 | Rs 12,500 | Rs 1,500 |
| Rs 27,000 | Rs 13,500 | Rs 1,620 |
| Rs 30,000 | Rs 15,000 | Rs 1,800 |
| Rs 33,000 | Rs 16,500 | Rs 1,980 |
Is a higher PF deduction good or bad?
It reduces your take-home pay today but builds a tax-efficient retirement fund. EPF interest has been around 8.25% a year in recent years, and a higher EPS contribution can improve your future pension.
