Sir Patrick Stewart, the British actor who became a global name as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films, has died at the age of 86. He died on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, at his home in Los Angeles.

His family shared the news on his social media account. They said he died in the loving care of his wife, Sunny, after what they called a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. His representatives asked admirers to consider donating to Alzheimer’s research and caregiver support.

His name was among the top trends on X in India on Friday, a sign of how far his work had travelled.

From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise

Long before Hollywood, Stewart was a stage actor. He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966 and was a core member for 16 years, returning later for more than 30 productions. Theatre remained his first love throughout his life.

In 1987 he took on the role of Captain Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The calm, bookish captain made him a household name, and his connection with the franchise ran for more than 35 years, through feature films and later the series Star Trek: Picard.

Professor X and later years

A new generation knew him as Professor Charles Xavier, the leader of the X-Men, a role he played across several films. He kept working well into his 80s. In his 2023 memoir he wrote that he still hoped to do another TV comedy.

He was knighted in 2010 for services to drama. Stewart is also set to appear posthumously in Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to release on 18 December.

Tributes from co-stars

Tributes came quickly. Ian McKellen, his close friend and X-Men co-star, described him as a man to rely on and admire. Hugh Jackman, William Shatner, Wil Wheaton, George Takei and many others posted messages, along with Star Trek, Marvel Studios, the Royal Shakespeare Company and Huddersfield Town, the football club from his home region.

Indian fans who grew up watching Star Trek reruns on cable TV in the 1990s, and later the X-Men films, also shared clips and favourite lines through the day.
