Pune, 5th November 2026: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) plans to build parking lots at eight locations along the Pune Metro network, and work has started at two of them, according to Punekar News.

PMRDA Commissioner Dr Abhijit Chaudhary said the authority has asked the municipal corporations concerned for land for the remaining sites.

The problem every Metro commuter knows

Most Metro stations in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad were built without dedicated parking. Commuters who ride to the station end up leaving their two-wheelers and cars along service roads or in the space under the elevated viaduct.

That narrows already busy roads, invites towing and fines, and puts off people who live beyond walking distance from a station. Vehicles left on open roadsides are also exposed to theft, rain and sun all day.

Why parking at stations matters for ridership

Metro systems in Indian cities have found that people who live more than a kilometre from a station rarely switch from their own vehicle unless they can park safely at the station or catch a quick feeder bus. In Pune, where two-wheelers dominate daily travel, a safe and cheap two-wheeler stand near the station often decides whether someone takes the Metro at all.

Stations on the PCMC to Swargate line, such as Nashik Phata, Kasarwadi and Bopodi, sit on the old Pune-Mumbai highway, where roadside space is limited and towing is common.

What we know about the plan

  • Number of sites: eight, along the Metro network
  • Status: work begun at two sites
  • Land: PMRDA has approached the municipal corporations, PMC and PCMC, for the other plots
  • Also planned: steps on last-mile connectivity, without details yet

What is not known yet

PMRDA has not named the eight locations, their parking capacity, the cost, or whether parking will be free or paid. It has not given a timeline for the remaining six sites either.

We will add the list of sites to this story once PMRDA publishes it.

Until then: how to reach a station without a parking spot

  • Feeder buses: PMPML has started feeder routes for Line 3. See our list of PMPML feeder routes for Metro Line 3.
  • Shared autos and cycles: Several stations have auto stands and public cycle points nearby.
  • Avoid viaduct parking: Traffic police often tow vehicles left on service roads near busy stations.
