Pune auto fares went up on 1 September 2026, but most riders still do not know what a normal trip should cost. We worked out the meter fare for every common distance from 1.5 km to 20 km, compared it with the PMPML bus fare for the same distance, and found the points where your choice saves the most money.
The short answer: a Pune auto now costs Rs 30 for the first 1.5 km and Rs 20 for each kilometre after that. A 5 km ride is about Rs 100, a 10 km ride about Rs 200. A PMPML bus covers the same 5 km for Rs 10.
What the new Pune auto fare is, and where it applies
The Regional Transport Authority raised the base fare from Rs 25 to Rs 30 for the first 1.5 km, and the per-km rate from Rs 17 to Rs 20, from 1 September 2026. The new tariff covers autos in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and Baramati, as reported by Punekar News and the Free Press Journal.
Two extra charges are allowed:
- Night charge: 25% extra between midnight and 5 am inside PMC and PCMC limits. Rural autos outside these limits may add 40% from 11 pm to 5 am.
- Luggage: Rs 3 per item that measures 60 cm by 40 cm or more. A small bag or backpack does not count.
Pune auto fare chart: 1.5 km to 20 km
The figures below are our own calculation from the RTA formula: Rs 30 for the first 1.5 km, plus Rs 20 for every kilometre after. The old fare column uses the earlier Rs 25 base and Rs 17 per km. Meters move in small steps, so your final reading may differ by a few rupees.
| Distance | New fare (day) | Old fare | Increase | Night (12 am to 5 am) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5 km | Rs 30 | Rs 25 | +Rs 5 | Rs 37.5 |
| 2 km | Rs 40 | Rs 33.5 | +Rs 6.5 | Rs 50 |
| 3 km | Rs 60 | Rs 50.5 | +Rs 9.5 | Rs 75 |
| 4 km | Rs 80 | Rs 67.5 | +Rs 12.5 | Rs 100 |
| 5 km | Rs 100 | Rs 84.5 | +Rs 15.5 | Rs 125 |
| 6 km | Rs 120 | Rs 101.5 | +Rs 18.5 | Rs 150 |
| 8 km | Rs 160 | Rs 135.5 | +Rs 24.5 | Rs 200 |
| 10 km | Rs 200 | Rs 169.5 | +Rs 30.5 | Rs 250 |
| 12 km | Rs 240 | Rs 203.5 | +Rs 36.5 | Rs 300 |
| 15 km | Rs 300 | Rs 254.5 | +Rs 45.5 | Rs 375 |
| 18 km | Rs 360 | Rs 305.5 | +Rs 54.5 | Rs 450 |
| 20 km | Rs 400 | Rs 339.5 | +Rs 60.5 | Rs 500 |
Two patterns stand out. First, the hike hits short trips hardest in percentage terms: a 1.5 km hop costs 20% more, while longer rides are about 18% more. Second, every extra half kilometre now adds Rs 10. A driver who takes a 2 km detour adds Rs 40 to your fare.
Auto or PMPML bus: how big the gap is at each distance
PMPML has charged by 5 km stages since its fare revision of 1 June 2025: Rs 10 up to 5 km, Rs 20 up to 10 km, Rs 30 up to 15 km and Rs 40 up to 20 km. Put next to the auto meter, the gap looks like this:
| Distance | Auto (day) | PMPML bus | Auto costs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 km | Rs 40 | Rs 10 | 4 times |
| 4 km | Rs 80 | Rs 10 | 8 times |
| 5 km | Rs 100 | Rs 10 | 10 times |
| 6 km | Rs 120 | Rs 20 | 6 times |
| 8 km | Rs 160 | Rs 20 | 8 times |
| 10 km | Rs 200 | Rs 20 | 10 times |
| 12 km | Rs 240 | Rs 30 | 8 times |
| 15 km | Rs 300 | Rs 30 | 10 times |
| 18 km | Rs 360 | Rs 40 | 9 times |
| 20 km | Rs 400 | Rs 40 | 10 times |
The auto is costliest compared with the bus at exactly 5, 10, 15 and 20 km, the last point before the bus moves to its next stage. At those distances the auto costs about ten times the bus ticket. Just past each stage, for example at 6 km, the gap narrows to about six times.
In practice, this means a rider going 4.5 km and one going 5.5 km pay very different bus fares (Rs 10 against Rs 20) but almost the same auto fare (Rs 90 against Rs 110).
When sharing an auto beats the bus
Three people sharing one meter split the fare three ways. Using the chart above:
- 2 km: Rs 40 split three ways is about Rs 13 each, close to the Rs 10 bus ticket. With door-to-door travel, the auto often wins here.
- 4 km: Rs 80 split three ways is about Rs 27 each, against Rs 10 on the bus.
- 8 km: Rs 160 split three ways is about Rs 53 each, against Rs 20 on the bus.
So for groups, the auto is only close to the bus for short hops of about 2 to 3 km. Beyond that, the bus stays cheaper even after splitting.
Night rides: what the 25% charge adds
Between midnight and 5 am, multiply the chart fare by 1.25. A 6 km ride that costs Rs 120 by day becomes Rs 150. A 10 km ride from Pune Station or Swargate bus stand after a late train or bus arrival goes from Rs 200 to Rs 250.
The charge starts at midnight, not at 11 pm, inside city limits. If a driver asks for night fare at 11.30 pm within PMC or PCMC limits, that is above the approved tariff.
PMPML daily and monthly pass: when they pay off
The daily pass for PMC and PCMC limits now costs Rs 70 and the monthly pass Rs 1,500, both reported by Lokshahi and Punekar News. Our maths on when each one is worth buying:
- Daily pass (Rs 70): pays off after 4 rides of 5 to 10 km (Rs 80 in single tickets), or 7 short rides under 5 km.
- Monthly pass (Rs 1,500) for a 22-day office month with two rides a day: single tickets cost Rs 880 for a 5 to 10 km commute, Rs 1,320 for 10 to 15 km and Rs 1,760 for 15 to 20 km. The pass beats single tickets only on the longest of these commutes, unless you also ride on weekends or take extra trips.
- Six-day week (26 days), 10 to 15 km each way: Rs 1,560 in single tickets, so the pass just about pays off.
Senior citizens should first check the PMPML 50% fare discount for 60+ riders, which halves single tickets and changes this maths. Our PMPML bus pass price guide lists every pass type.
Where Pune Metro fits
Pune Metro fares run from Rs 10 to Rs 35 by distance. A full ride from PCMC to Swargate on the Purple Line costs Rs 30, according to The Bridge Chronicle. The line is about 16.6 km long; an auto ride of similar length would cost over Rs 300 at the new rate.
For most riders, the cheapest door-to-door option is a short auto or walk to the nearest station, then Metro. A 2 km auto (Rs 40) plus a Rs 30 Metro ticket still costs less than a quarter of a 17 km auto ride. See our Pune Metro timings and fares guide for first and last trains.
How to check your meter before you pay
- At the start, the meter should show Rs 30 (or the tariff-card equivalent) for the first 1.5 km.
- Check the distance. For a known trip, the fare should be close to Rs 30 plus Rs 20 for each km after 1.5 km.
- Until 28 February 2027, drivers whose meters are not yet recalibrated may use an official tariff card that converts the old meter reading to the new fare. Ask to see the card.
- From 1 March 2027, tariff cards will no longer be accepted, according to Punekar News, and fares must come from a calibrated meter.
Regional Transport Officer Archana Gaikwad told the Free Press Journal that calibration facilities had been set up so that meters match the revised fare. If a driver refuses the meter or overcharges, note the auto number and report it to the Pune RTO.
What is still not clear
- Waiting charges under the new tariff have not been widely reported. We will add them when the RTA’s full fare card is published.
- App-based autos (Ola, Uber, Rapido) set their own prices and can differ from the meter fare in this chart.
- PMPML stage fares above 20 km were not part of the main reports we checked, so this guide stops at 20 km.
We will update this chart if the RTA or PMPML revises fares again. For more on getting around, see our Pune traffic and Metro section.
Disclaimer: fares are calculated by Puneri Pages from the published RTA and PMPML rates and are for guidance. The fare shown on a calibrated meter or official tariff card is final.
