If you have already married in a religious ceremony in Pune, register it with the Pune Municipal Corporation’s marriage registrar under the Maharashtra Regulation of Marriage Bureaus and Registration of Marriages Act, 1998. You need ID and age proof for both spouses, the wedding invitation or a priest’s certificate, wedding photographs and three witnesses. Couples who want a civil marriage without a religious ceremony use the Special Marriage Act instead.

A marriage certificate is needed for passports, visas, bank nominations, insurance and changing a surname.

Route 1: registering a marriage already solemnised

This is the usual route for Hindu, Muslim, Christian and other religious weddings.

  1. Fill in the marriage registration memorandum online through PMC’s services, or collect it from the PMC marriage registration office or your ward office.
  2. Book an appointment where the online system offers it.
  3. Appear in person with your spouse and three witnesses, with originals and self-attested copies.
  4. The registrar checks the documents and issues the certificate.

Register within 90 days of the wedding to avoid a late fee.

Documents usually needed

  • Filled memorandum with photographs of the couple
  • Age proof for both: birth certificate, school leaving certificate or passport (the groom must be 21 and the bride 18)
  • ID and address proof for both: Aadhaar, passport or voter ID
  • Wedding invitation card, or a certificate from the priest or the person who solemnised the marriage
  • A photograph of the wedding ceremony
  • ID and address proof of the three witnesses
  • Divorce decree or death certificate of a previous spouse, if applicable
  • Fee receipt

Route 2: Special Marriage Act

Couples of any religion can marry under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, before the marriage officer for Pune district.

  1. Give a notice of intended marriage online or at the marriage officer’s office. One of you must have lived in the district for at least 30 days.
  2. The notice is displayed for 30 days for objections.
  3. After 30 days, marry before the marriage officer with three witnesses and receive the certificate.

Fees

The fee depends on the route and on how long after the wedding you register. Check the current fee at the counter or on the online form.

Tip: Make sure names on the invitation card, Aadhaar and school certificate match. Mismatches are the commonest reason files are sent back.
