Milne rocks India early, Kishan and Iyer hit back
India were in trouble inside four overs. Adam Milne removed Abhishek Sharma in the second over and Sanju Samson soon after, leaving India at 19 for 2. Ishan Kishan and captain Shreyas Iyer then put on 93 in about seven overs. Kishan hit five fours and five sixes in his 61, and Iyer reached 50 off just 23 balls with four sixes.
Both fell in quick succession, Kishan at 112 and Iyer at 123, and India lost momentum in the middle overs. Naman Dhir’s 33 and Nitish Kumar Reddy’s 22 took them past 190, but Milne came back at the death to finish with 4 for 19 from his four overs.
Seifert takes the game away
New Zealand lost Finn Allen early to Arshdeep Singh, but Seifert attacked from the start. He and Daryl Mitchell added 73 for the second wicket, and after Varun Chakravarthy removed Mitchell, Seifert and Phillips put on 86 more. Seifert hit 11 fours and five sixes before Nitish Kumar Reddy bowled him for 93, with only 24 runs needed. Phillips closed it out with eight fours and three sixes.
India’s bowlers had a tough night. Bhuvneshwar Kumar went for 41 in four overs without a wicket, and every bowler who bowled more than one over conceded more than nine an over.
Three takeaways for India
- The series win stands. Three wins in a row to start the series meant the last two games were dead rubbers. New Zealand were sharper in both.
- Kishan and Iyer impressed with the bat. Kishan’s 61 and Iyer’s fast fifty were the positives of the night.
- The death bowling needs work. Conceding 259 in Auckland and then losing a 192 defence in Hamilton shows the attack struggled once New Zealand got going on true pitches.
