Pune, 5th November 2026: Democrats have won control of both chambers of the US Congress in the 2026 midterm elections, flipping seven Republican-held Senate seats and more than two dozen House seats. Two Senate races, in Mississippi and Alaska, were still too close to call on Wednesday, US time.
According to NBC News projections reported on Wednesday, Democrats are set to hold 54 Senate seats to Republicans’ 44, and 258 House seats to Republicans’ 177. A majority needs 51 seats in the Senate and 218 in the House.
The scoreboard: before and after the vote
- Senate before: Republicans 53, Democrats 47 (including two independents who vote with Democrats).
- Senate now (projected): Democrats 54, Republicans 44, two uncalled.
- House before: Republicans 218, Democrats 214, one independent and two vacancies.
- House now (projected): Democrats 258, Republicans 177.
- Governors now: Democrats 28, Republicans 20, two uncalled, against 27 Republican and 23 Democratic governors before the vote.
Counts by different outlets differ slightly because they project uncalled seats differently. Al Jazeera, citing the Associated Press tally, put Democrats at 228 House seats already won and leading in 34 more.
The seven Senate seats that changed hands
All seven flips went from Republican to Democrat.
- Texas: James Talarico defeated Ken Paxton for an open Republican seat.
- Ohio: Former senator Sherrod Brown defeated Senator Jon Husted.
- Maine: Troy Jackson unseated Senator Susan Collins.
- North Carolina: Former governor Roy Cooper defeated Michael Whatley.
- South Carolina: Annie Andrews defeated Senator Darline Graham.
- Kansas: Adam Hamilton defeated Senator Roger Marshall, the first Democratic Senate win in the state since 1932.
- Iowa: Josh Turek defeated Ashley Hinson. This was the race that gave Democrats their majority, Forbes reported.
Democrats also held their own competitive seats. Jon Ossoff won re-election in Georgia, Chris Pappas kept New Hampshire, and Abdul El-Sayed won in Michigan, becoming the first Muslim member of the Senate.

How Trump responded
President Donald Trump told Fox News, “I think the Democrats did a good job. I really do,” according to Al Jazeera. It is the first time in 20 years that a Republican president has lost both houses of Congress in one election, the last being George W. Bush in 2006.
What changes now, and when
The new Congress takes office on 3 January 2027. From then, Democrats will control which bills reach the floor, chair every committee, and can open investigations into the administration.
They cannot pass laws on their own, because the president can veto them, and Democrats do not have the two-thirds majority needed to override a veto. In practice, expect fights over the budget, war powers related to Iran, tariffs and immigration enforcement.
Voters’ reasons are in our analysis of the 2026 exit polls. We will update this page as the last races are called.
