A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works inside the client’s business, finds the real problem and builds the fix on the spot, instead of waiting for a finished specification from someone else. Indian IT companies now want thousands of them, and job portals list FDE salaries in India well above a regular developer’s pay.
The term has gone from a Silicon Valley job title to a common question among Indian engineers in a few months. Here is what the job involves, what it pays, who can realistically get it, and what it means for the lakhs of IT employees in Hinjewadi, Kharadi and Magarpatta.
Why everyone is suddenly searching for “FDE”
Two numbers explain the buzz. India’s five biggest IT services firms, TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech and Tech Mahindra, ended FY26 with 7,389 fewer employees than they started with, after adding 12,718 people in FY25, according to figures compiled from company results. A year earlier, in July 2025, TCS had said it would cut about 2% of its workforce, more than 12,000 jobs.
Then, on 12 July 2026, TCS CEO K Krithivasan said the company wants 1% to 1.5% of its associates in forward deployed roles, roughly 5,900 to 8,900 people. “This has nothing to do with cost arbitrage,” he told Reuters.
So the same industry is shrinking overall and paying a premium for one new kind of engineer. That contrast is the subject of a widely watched Think School video from 8 October 2026, which has crossed 1.3 million views.
The video makes a useful point about how IT services make money, and we explain it below in our own words. One thing readers should know: the video is sponsored by a paid FDE training course, which it promotes in its last few minutes. Puneri Pages does not recommend any course, and nothing in this article is sponsored.
What a forward deployed engineer actually does
Think of how a typical outsourcing project works today. A US or European client writes the plan, decides the technology and sends a list of roles: one architect with 10 years’ experience, four senior developers, ten developers. Several vendors quote a price per hour, and the cheapest credible bid wins.
The vendor earns the gap between what it bills per hour and what it pays the engineer. The engineer builds what the document says. Nobody asks whether the document is right.
An FDE flips that order. The client does not send a list of people; it sends a problem. “Our claims take 40 days to settle.” “Our plant loses two hours every shift to machine changeovers.” The FDE sits with the claims team or the plant supervisors, works out where the time goes, connects the messy data, and ships a working tool, often built around an AI model, in weeks.
The role was made famous by Palantir, the US data analytics company, which sent engineers to sit inside government agencies and customers. OpenAI, Anthropic and Microsoft have also expanded FDE hiring, Reuters reported. Amazon Web Services has a comparable role called solutions architect.
FDE vs regular software engineer
| Regular IT services developer | Forward deployed engineer | |
|---|---|---|
| Starts with | A written specification | A business problem |
| Works from | Offshore delivery centre | Client’s office, teams or plant floor |
| Main skill | Writing code to spec | Understanding the business, then coding |
| Judged on | Tasks closed, hours billed | Whether the problem got solved |
| Talks to | Team lead | Client managers and end users |
Why AI hits the bottom of the IT pyramid first
Take a typical project at a large IT services firm: building a loan application screen for a foreign bank. A few senior people design it. Most of the hours, though, go to juniors writing test cases, filling in standard code, fixing old bugs and writing notes on what each module does.
That is the base of the pyramid, and it is where most freshers start. The work comes with clear instructions and a known right answer, which is exactly the kind of task AI coding assistants now finish in minutes.
The knock-on effect matters more. Team leads and project managers spend much of their day assigning and tracking that junior work. If an AI tool does a large share of it, fewer people need coordinating, and fewer coordinators are needed. Think School’s video argues that the middle layer shrinks along with the base.
Not everyone agrees the shift will be that sudden. Gaurav Vasu, founder of research firm UnearthInsight, told Analytics India Magazine that FDEs are “enhanced functional consultants,” a value-added service rather than a new business model, because clients still run large SAP, Oracle and Workday systems that need regular teams.
How many FDEs Indian IT companies plan to hire
Here is what each company has said publicly so far. Not every firm uses the “FDE” label.
| Company | What it announced | Who said it |
|---|---|---|
| TCS | 1% to 1.5% of staff in FDE roles, about 5,900 to 8,900 | CEO K Krithivasan, 12 July 2026 |
| Infosys | 6,000 “frontier engineers” over the next few years | CEO Salil Parekh |
| LTIMindtree (LTM) | AI1000 plan for 1,000 forward-deployed AI engineers | Company, June quarter |
| Cognizant | 5,000 Frontier Certified Engineers and 10,000 Frontier Business Operators | Company |
| HCLTech | No number; “build and buy” pipeline, mostly reskilling with some lateral hiring | Chief People Officer Ramachandran Sundararajan |
Two points stand out. Even the biggest plan, TCS’s, covers only 1% to 1.5% of its workforce. And companies have not said how many of these roles will go to outside hires: HCLTech says it will mostly retrain its own staff, while TCS has not said either way. Do not expect mass campus hiring for FDE roles.
Forward deployed engineer salary in India
According to TeamLease Digital figures reported by Analytics India Magazine:
- Entry-level FDE roles: Rs 18 lakh to Rs 25 lakh a year
- Senior FDE roles: up to Rs 85 lakh a year or more
- North America (AI labs, cloud companies): about $300,000 to $600,000 a year
Compare that with the Rs 3 lakh to Rs 4 lakh that many large IT firms offer freshers, and the excitement makes sense. But “entry-level FDE” does not mean entry-level engineer. It usually means your first FDE job after several years of real development work.
TeamLease Digital also says FDE demand rose nearly 800% from Q1 FY26 to Q1 FY27. Staffing firm Xpheno estimates India has only about 2,800 people who could step into the role today. Scarce supply is why the pay is high. As more engineers train for it, that premium may narrow.
Can freshers become forward deployed engineers?
Rarely, at least straight out of college. Companies want someone who can be trusted alone in front of a client, which usually takes two or more years of shipping production code. CIEL HR Services estimates that only about 12% of India’s entry-level talent pool is ready for AI and machine learning roles.
What a final-year student in Pune can do now:
- Pick one industry and learn how it works. Insurance claims, auto manufacturing, logistics, hospital billing, or lending. Pune has large employers in most of these.
- Build one project that solves a real process problem, not another to-do app. For example, a tool that reads PDF invoices and flags mismatches.
- Get strong in Python, SQL and one cloud platform, and learn how to call AI models through their APIs.
- Practise explaining your work to a non-technical person in plain English, Marathi or Hindi. Client conversation is half the job.
- Take a regular developer job first and ask for client-facing or AI projects inside it.
Skills an FDE roadmap should cover
If you already have a few years of experience, these are the skill areas the job described above calls for:
- Coding across the stack: Python, SQL, APIs, and enough front end to ship a usable screen
- Data plumbing: cleaning and joining data from old systems, spreadsheets and databases
- AI building blocks: prompting, retrieval (RAG), AI agents, evaluating whether outputs are correct
- Cloud and security basics: AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, access control, handling client data safely
- Domain knowledge: how money, goods or patients move through the client’s business
- Consulting habits: asking the right questions, writing clear notes, saying no to bad requirements
You do not need a paid certificate to show these. A public portfolio and references from client-facing projects count for more in most interviews.
What this means for Pune’s IT workforce
Pune is no longer only a city of outsourcing centres. A June 2026 report by KPMG in India, AMCHAM and UnearthIQ counts more than 500 global capability centres (GCCs) in Pune, employing about 2.2 lakh tech professionals, with up to 680 expected by FY30.

That matters for FDE-style work. A GCC is a company’s own in-house tech centre, so its engineers already sit close to the business: the bank’s lending team, the carmaker’s plant, the insurer’s claims desk. Pune’s mix of automobile, engineering, banking and insurance employers gives local engineers good chances to build the domain knowledge the role needs.
For the thousands who commute to Hinjewadi Phase 1, 2 and 3, Kharadi’s EON and World Trade Center belt, or Magarpatta, the practical lesson is the same whether or not your next job carries the FDE title: work that only follows a document is the work most exposed to AI tools. Work that needs judgment, client trust and business knowledge is not.
Many of those commuters now ride Pune Metro Line 3 to Hinjewadi and its new PMPML feeder buses. For more career news, see our Jobs and Careers section.
What is still not clear
- How many FDE roles will go to outside hires versus reskilled employees. TCS has not said.
- Whether Indian firms will pay FDEs the ranges staffing firms quote, or create lower-paid “FDE-like” titles.
- Whether clients will pay outcome-based fees for this work, which is what makes the model profitable.
We will update this explainer as companies share hiring numbers in their quarterly results.

Frequently asked questions
What is the full form of FDE in IT?
FDE stands for forward deployed engineer, a developer who works directly with a client’s teams to understand a business problem and build the software that solves it.
What is the salary of a forward deployed engineer in India?
TeamLease Digital estimates Rs 18 lakh to Rs 25 lakh a year for entry-level FDE roles and up to Rs 85 lakh or more for senior roles. Pay varies a lot between IT services firms, GCCs and AI product companies.
Can a fresher get a forward deployed engineer job?
It is uncommon. Most FDE openings ask for at least two years of hands-on development experience plus comfort talking to clients, so freshers usually start as developers and move into the role.
Is a forward deployed engineer the same as a solutions engineer?
They overlap. A solutions engineer often helps sell and set up a product, while an FDE stays longer with the client and writes much of the custom software and data work.
