Pune, 5th November 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has cut short the extension of its performance-based road sweeping contracts to three months, instead of the one year approved by the Standing Committee. Fresh tenders will now be floated separately for each of the city’s 15 ward offices.
The decision was reported by Punekar News on 4 November. Additional Municipal Commissioner Prajit Nair said the new tendering will be completed within the three-month window.
How we got here
- 1 August to 31 October 2026: PMC runs a three-month pilot of performance-based road sweeping through private contractors.
- 30 October: The Standing Committee approves a one-year extension for the same contractors.
- Early November: The administration limits the extension to three months and decides on fresh, ward-wise tenders.
The direct extension without tenders had already been challenged in the Bombay High Court by former corporators, and corporators had alleged that contractors were deploying fewer sanitation workers than approved.
The new rules contractors will have to meet
The proposed tender conditions, as listed in the report, tie payment to attendance and add tighter supervision.
- Full payment only if sanitation worker attendance reaches 85%, with a proportionate cut below that.
- Action against the contractor if attendance falls below 70%.
- Supervision fee reduced from 8% to 6%.
- One supervisor for every 25 to 30 sanitation workers.
- Online attendance records and a dedicated grievance system.
- Citizen complaints to be answered within three days, and a decision on cancelling a contract for repeated lapses within seven days.
- Regular and deep cleaning of roads, public spaces, chronic garbage spots and vacant plots.
The objection from former corporators
Former Leader of the Opposition Ujjwal Keskar questioned the move. He said the administration cannot change a Standing Committee resolution on its own and needs state government permission to do so.
That leaves a procedural question open even as the shorter extension takes effect.
What Pune residents will notice
Daily sweeping on main roads such as Karve Road, JM Road, Sinhagad Road and Nagar Road is done in the early morning. For now, the same contractors continue until the new ward-wise contracts are in place, roughly by the end of January.
The ward-wise model matters at street level. Each of the 15 ward offices, from Aundh-Baner to Hadapsar-Mundhwa, will have its own contractor, which makes it easier to know who is responsible for a dirty stretch.
If your lane is skipped or a garbage spot is not cleared, report it with a photo through the channels in our PMC complaint and helpline guide. Under the new terms, contractors must respond within three days.
Details still missing
The report does not give contract values, the number of sanitation workers deployed, or contractor names. It also does not say when the High Court will hear the petition.
