Pune, 4th November 2026: The Khadakwasla to Kharadi Metro, planned above Sinhagad Road, may not stay there. Pune Mayor Manjusha Nagpure has suggested a canal or Mutha riverside route, and Maha Metro MD Shravan Hardikar said the alignment could be reconsidered.

The exchange came at the foundation stone event for Pune Metro Phase II on Tuesday, 3 November, where Maha Metro set a five-year target to finish all four new corridors.

What exactly was said about the Sinhagad Road route?

The Khadakwasla to Kharadi line, called Line 4, largely follows the existing road. Nagpure suggested taking it along the canal or the river instead of building it elevated over Sinhagad Road, citing the inconvenience to residents. Hardikar responded that the alignment could be looked at again, Free Press Journal reported.

No decision has been announced. Maha Metro has not said who would study the change, or by when.

Why do residents worry about a Metro over Sinhagad Road?

Sinhagad Road already has a long flyover, and the Metro would have to be built around it. In a letter to Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram submitted in December 2025, Nagpure, then a corporator, said an elevated line would need holes drilled at 66 locations in the flyover for pillars, according to The Bridge Chronicle.

She argued that drilling could damage the flyover and choke traffic during construction, and that a route along the canal or riverbed would avoid both. Residents of the Sinhagad Road belt, from Vadgaon and Dhayari to Hingne and Anandnagar, already deal with heavy peak-hour traffic towards Swargate and the city.

The counter-argument is reach. A line on the main road sits closest to the shops, offices and housing along it, while a canal or river route could be several hundred metres away for many commuters. Maha Metro has not published any comparison of the two options.

What is in Pune Metro Phase II?

Phase II adds about 44 km over four corridors, at an estimated cost of about Rs 13,500 crore:

  • Line 2A, Vanaz to Chandni Chowk: 1.12 km, 2 stations
  • Line 2B, Ramwadi to Vitthalwadi (Wagholi): 11.63 km, 5 stations
  • Line 4, Khadakwasla to Kharadi: 25.52 km, 22 stations, via Sinhagad Road, Swargate, Hadapsar and Magarpatta
  • Line 4A, Nal Stop to Manik Baug: 6.12 km, towards Warje

Interchanges are planned at Swargate, Nal Stop and Kharadi Bypass. Some infrastructure will be built by the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC), while Maha Metro will build the Paud Road to Karve Road section, Free Press Journal reported. Line 4 and 4A together have 27 stations, according to IANS.

Our earlier report on the Rs 21,800 crore projects launched on 3 November has the full background.

Will a route change delay Line 4?

It is not clear. Maha Metro’s five-year target covers all of Phase II. A new alignment would need fresh surveys, and possibly land along the canal or river, but Maha Metro has not said whether a review would affect the timeline or cost.

Hardikar also said Phase I is nearly complete except the PCMC to Bhakti Shakti extension, that work on the Swargate-Katraj underground extension is under way, and that peak-hour frequency on the existing network is expected to improve from seven minutes to five.

What is still not known?

  • Whether Maha Metro will formally study the canal or river options
  • Which canal stretch or river bank would be used
  • How many of Line 4’s 22 stations would move
  • Whether a change would need fresh approval from the state or the Centre
