Pune, 1st November 2026: If you live in Pune district, now is the time to check whether your name is still on the voter list. The draft electoral roll published under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) has 62.13 lakh electors in the district, against 90.80 lakh on the earlier roll. That is about 28.66 lakh names, or nearly one in three, missing from the draft.

The good news is that there is more time to fix it. The Election Commission has extended the deadline for claims and objections in Maharashtra from 26 October to 13 November. The notice stage and settlement of claims will continue until 25 November, and the final roll will be published on 30 November.

Why so many Pune names were left out

According to district figures reported this week, 17.83 lakh voters in Pune were marked “untraceable” during the house-to-house verification and 5.91 lakh were recorded as “shifted”. The rest fall under the absent, dead and duplicate categories. Pune’s 21 Assembly constituencies together account for the highest number of exclusions in the state, out of a statewide figure of over two crore names left out of the draft.

Part of the reason is the way Pune lives. Lakhs of people here are tenants, students, IT employees and migrant workers who change flats every year or two. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) visited homes and handed out pre-filled enumeration forms, which were collected between 30 June and 17 August. Old rolls from 2002 to 2004 were used as a reference. Anyone who was not at home, had moved within the city, or did not return the form could have been marked absent or shifted.

Officials have stressed that a missing name does not mean a person is ineligible. Pune Deputy District Election Officer Minal Kalaskar has said the real measure will be how many claims are accepted and names restored.

How to check your name

  • Go to the Election Commission’s Voters’ Services Portal (voters.eci.gov.in) and use the search by EPIC number, or by name and details. You can also use the Voter Helpline app.
  • Check the draft roll for your part (booth) on the Pune district election page or the Chief Electoral Officer, Maharashtra website.
  • If you are unsure, ask your BLO. Most housing societies have the BLO’s number on the notice board or with the secretary.

Note that having a voter ID card (EPIC) does not by itself mean your name is on the current roll. Check the roll, not the card.

Which form to file

  • Form 6: if your name is missing and you want it included, or you are a new voter.
  • Form 8: if you have moved within the city or state, or need to correct your name, age, photo or other details.
  • Form 7: to object to a wrong entry, such as the name of a person who has died or moved away.

Forms can be filed online on the Voters’ Services Portal or given to the BLO. Keep the acknowledgement number and track the status. If you receive a notice from the Electoral Registration Officer, reply within the time given, with an address proof and identity document.

The bigger picture

The SIR has become a national political issue. On 1 November, opposition parties held a rally in Delhi demanding the Chief Election Commissioner’s resignation over voter deletions, and a petition challenging the Maharashtra SIR is before the Supreme Court. Read our report on the INDIA bloc rally at Ramlila Maidan.

Whatever the politics, the practical step for Pune voters is simple: check before 13 November. Names can generally still be added after the final roll through the continuous updation process, but that takes time, and no additions are made for an election after the last date of nominations. The Election Commission has revised the SIR schedule more than once, and we will update this article if the dates change again.
