Pune Illicit Liquor Crackdown: A Coordinated Strike
The crackdown was not a single raid but a carefully planned, multi-location operation. Teams from Zone 4 police targeted riverbed settlements, which are commonly used to conceal such illegal activities. Acting on intelligence inputs, officers moved in simultaneously at different sites, ensuring that the operations were wiped out in one decisive action.
DCP Vijayakumar Magar, who led the action, emphasized that such illegal liquor dens are a threat to both law and public safety and will not be tolerated.
What Was Destroyed in the Pune Illicit Liquor Crackdown
The raids revealed the large scale at which the illegal trade was being conducted. Police teams destroyed:
- Thousands of litres of fermented jaggery wash – the raw chemical used to distill country liquor.
- Hundreds of iron and plastic barrels used for storing and fermenting the wash.
- Several illegally constructed furnaces (bhattis) used to heat and distill the liquor.
By dismantling both the raw stock and the equipment, police ensured that production could not resume at these sites.
The Danger of Illicit Liquor: A Public Health Menace
Illicit liquor, often referred to as hooch or country liquor, is not just illegal but also highly dangerous. It is frequently contaminated with toxic substances like methanol, which can cause blindness, organ damage, or even death.
Past incidents across India have shown how such liquor has led to mass casualties, making the police action in Pune not just a law enforcement measure but a critical step for public health and safety.
A Stern Message from the Top
Police officials stressed that this operation is part of a broader, zero-tolerance directive against illegal activities. DCP Magar reiterated that Pune Police will continue to conduct such crackdowns to dismantle illicit liquor operations at their roots.
By striking at the source, Zone 4 police have sent a strong message that illegal liquor production will not be allowed to endanger communities in Pune.
