Tamhini Ghat is one of those magical spots near Pune where the rain paints everything green, the clouds kiss the hills, and waterfalls appear out of nowhere. But sometimes, nature doesn’t just perform — it warns. And that’s exactly what it did this weekend.

What Happened: Tamhini Was Drenched
Over just 12 hours, Tamhini Ghat received a mind-boggling 266 mm of rainfall. To give you an idea — that’s not just your typical monsoon shower. That’s “stay home, don’t even think of riding out” kind of rain.
I know, I know. The idea of driving down the lush curves of Tamhini, grabbing bhajiyas from a roadside stall, and taking in that fresh petrichor breeze is tempting — but this weekend was not the time for it.
People Ignored Warnings. And Got Stuck.
Despite heavy rain alerts from the IMD, many folks still rushed to Tamhini for that perfect weekend reel. And guess what happened? Multiple tourists got stranded near waterfalls and flooded roads. Local police and rescue teams had to step in.
We need to stop underestimating the Western Ghats during peak monsoon. It’s not just misty views and rain selfies — it’s slippery roads, landslides, and zero visibility zones.
Bhira Dam Update: Rain Helps, But We’re Not There Yet
The good news? All this rain did boost water levels in Bhira Dam, which feeds large parts of Raigad and parts of Pune. After weeks of dry forecasts, this downpour was a blessing for our reservoirs.
But let’s not forget: one weekend of rain doesn’t solve everything. The Pune district still has a water storage deficit, and we’ll need consistent monsoon showers — not just one-off spikes — to get things back to normal.
My Honest Take — As a Local
I’ve grown up seeing people fall in love with monsoon drives. And I get it. There’s something magical about watching waterfalls form before your eyes and hearing thunder roll through the valleys.
But right now? I’d say skip the trip. Don’t risk it for a reel.
There will be better weekends — safer, clearer, more enjoyable. And the mountains? They’ll still be there.
Final Word: Stay Safe, Stay Smart
This rain isn’t over. More showers are expected across Pune, Mulshi, and Raigad. If you’re planning a road trip into the ghats, especially in areas like Tamhini or Lonavala — please pause and check the weather.
Because loving the monsoon also means respecting it.
