If you live in Pune, you already know how much the metro has started changing the way we move around the city. And trust me, it’s only getting bigger. New lines, extensions, and stations are in the works, and if you’re like me—always checking what’s coming next—this quick guide will help you stay updated.
One thing though: metro project deadlines are notoriously flexible. So take the dates as the latest info available, but don’t be surprised if things shift around a bit.
Table of Contents
🚇 Metro Line 3: Hinjawadi ↔ Civil Court (via Shivajinagar)
This is the big one everyone in IT has been waiting for. Line 3 will finally connect Hinjawadi’s tech parks to the heart of the city at Civil Court. No more being stuck in endless Hinjawadi traffic!
- Operator: PMRDA (with Tata-Siemens SPV)
- Current Status: Elevated tracks and stations are coming up fast. Trial runs are already happening on a 4 km stretch between Maan Depot and PMR04.
- Expected Opening: First phase (Megapolis Circle → Balewadi Phata) could start by September 2025. The full stretch should be ready by March 2026.
Stations to Watch For (23 total): Megapolis Circle, Infosys Phase II, Wipro Phase II, Hinjawadi, Wakad Chowk, Balewadi Stadium, Baner, University, Shivaji Nagar… and finally Civil Court, where it connects with other lines.
👉 Why it matters: If you work in Hinjawadi or live near Baner, this line is going to be a game-changer. It’ll save hours of commute time and finally give IT employees a smoother way into the city.
🟣 Purple Line Extension: Swargate ↔ Katraj (Underground)
This one dives underground—literally. The Purple Line is being extended from Swargate down to Katraj, cutting right through dense residential areas.
- Operator: Maha Metro
- Current Status: Tunneling and station construction are underway. It’s a huge engineering challenge, so don’t expect this to be ready overnight.
- Timeline: It’s unlikely to finish in 2025, but work will continue throughout the year.
👉 Why it matters: Katraj has been crying out for better connectivity for years. Once this section is done, people in southern Pune won’t have to depend so heavily on buses and two-wheelers.
✅ Recently Opened Sections (for context)
Just so you can see how fast things have been moving:
- Purple Line: Phugewadi → District Court (Aug 2023), District Court → Swargate (Sep 2024)
- Aqua Line: Vanaz → Garware College (Mar 2022), Garware → Ruby Hall Clinic (Aug 2023), Ruby Hall Clinic → Ramwadi (Mar 2024)
💡 Why Pune Metro Updates Matter for Commuters
